World Requirements Every nation needs to continually develop leadership skills in order to accomplish success The world is divided into two categories of people: • LEADERS and • Followers Civilization must experience progress, and progress depends upon good leadership.
Person Specifications What makes a good leader? • Long term thinkers who see beyond the day’s crisis and the next monthly report • Constantly reaching beyond their specific area of influence • Puts heavy emphasis on vision, values and motivation • Must have strong people skills • Never accepts the status quo

Attributes of An Effective Leader • The Leader has Vision. Leaders have empires in their brains, they are fired up by vision. • Vision must be clear and concise • Dare to dream – Dream motivates • Vision is feeling challenged and being compelled to make a huge difference. • Vision must be focused. • Vision must be attainable • It is a comprehensive sense of seeing the big picture and painting a mark on it. • Vision creates power, productivity and self esteem

The Leader has Discipline. continual success cannot be achieved without discipline. • Some regard discipline as a hardship; in reality discipline permits success and sets free from futile living. • In this world, we either discipline ourselves or we are disciplined by others. • Life is about 20% what happens to us and 80% in the way we respond to events e.g. Albert Einstein

The Leader has WISDOM: • Wisdom is the ability to apply knowledge and experience to any given situation. • A leader gathers Knowledge, by reading and networking across boundaries • Leaders Take Time for others – inspiring others • Leaders must be able to communicate wisdom effectively, by valuing the uniqueness of every individual. • A leader who has wisdom demonstrates integrity • Corruption and dishonesty occurs when the leader loses sight of the fact that s/he is in position to serve others

The Leader has WISDOM ctd: MAINTAINING INTEGRITY: • Honour your word • Don’t lie to cover facts – credibility is hard to regain • Take responsibility for your mistakes and learn from them • Guard your tongue – don’t divulge sensitive information or information given in confidence • People are changed, not by coercion or intimidation, but by example
Attributes of An Effective Leader ctd 3. The Leader has WISDOM ctd: Cultivate a group of tried and trusted people who can advise you and supplement your wisdom and knowledge. Learn to accept good advise. Such people are: • Discrete, • Consistent – not a yes-man • Positive • Has your interest at heart, • Has common sense.
Attributes of An Effective Leader ctd • The Leader has COURAGE: “Courage is resistance to fear, mastery of fear – not absence of fear” – Mark Twain Leadership is often a battle, and the fight requires courage. Having courage means that you will do what is right, regardless of the consequences. “One man with courage is a Majority” – Andrew Jackson Courage is saying “yes” to life; not breaking down when you face adversity.
Attributes of An Effective Leader ctd • The Leader has COURAGE ctd: Not everyone is courageous, some will need the encouragement of your courage… Some of the things that limit or kill courage: • Worry/Anxiety: causes confusion and fear; keep on target don’t get side-tracked. • Fear: causes paralysis. You only really fail when you stop trying. Leaders are people who are not afraid to fail, knowing that failure is a consequence of trying.

These keep you focused. • Identify worry as an item to be neutralised, • What is the problem • What is the cause • What are the solutions • What solution is best? • Worry sees the problem CONCERN settles the problem !

A humble spirit is one of the surest evidences of greatness. • A leader who is secure has nothing to protect • Does not expect recognition for every achievement • Cares little about getting credit • Leaders see themselves as part of the team • They share rewards and limelight with others • Morale and productivity are highest in groups when leaders show a high degree of concern and consideration for the team
Attributes of An Effective Leader ctd • The Leader has HUMILITY ctd: • Fair, Firm and Friendly • Nurtures, encourage and develops staff • A good listener – not too busy to listen, not too aloof to mingle • Take time to laugh – you only use up 14 face muscles to laugh, whilst you use up 72 muscles to frown!
