  2. What is a “mentor”? An experienced person in a company, organization, college, or school who trains and counsels those new to a situation or position.

  3. Why is mentoring important to the success of our District? We must ensure that Kiwanians who accept leadership positions at the District, Division and Club levels are fully prepared to be successful in their new roles.

  4. Why is mentoring important to the success of our District? Personal growth and development is one of the greatest personal benefits Kiwanis offers its members and potential members.

  5. What are the benefits of mentoring our members? • Membership satisfaction and increase in membership retention • Successful service and fundraising projects • Quality outcomes for the children we serve

  6. Positive Kiwanis image in the community • Increased interest from employers who support their employees in leadership development organizations • What other benefits can you identify from your experience?

  7. Who needs to be a mentor? • Governor • Governor-elect, • Vice Governor • Lieutenant Governors • Regional Trustees • District Chairs • Divisional Chairs • Club President • President-elect • Vice President • Club Secretary • Club Treasurer, • Club Directors • Club Committee Chairs

  9. Effective mentoring takes time. That is why Kiwanis develops its leaders through mentoring and succession planning. This is a look at succession planning within E. C. and C.

  10. Mentoring Your Successor

  11. Be a positive role model. • Review the current job description and arrange to have it updated if necessary, in accordance with appropriate procedures.

  12. Connect with your successor as soon as they are elected or appointed to their new position. • Know the date your successor will assume their role in accordance with the prescribed succession planning.

  13. Effective Mentoring Support your successor before and after they assume their new position.

  14. Meet with your successor regularly to discuss the role and responsibilities of the position

  15. Effective Mentoring Develop a positive, respectful working relationship with your successor.

  16. Be honest about the time commitment involved. • Be honest about challenges or concerns you are aware of related to the position. No surprises!

  17. Be open to your successor’s new ideas; we do not always have to do things the same way.

  18. Motivate with positive feedback. Guide with thoughtful feedback.

  19. Be respectful of the time it may take your successor to learn the duties of the position.

  20. A truly great mentor strives to help their successor surpass their own success.
