Effective mentoring plays a crucial role in developing successful leaders within Kiwanis. By training and counseling new members in leadership positions, we enhance personal growth, increase membership retention, and improve the quality of service projects. Mentors, including governors, vice governors, and club presidents, are encouraged to foster a supportive relationship with their successors. This module outlines the importance of mentoring for the success of our District and shares strategies to guide and motivate new leaders. Together, we can ensure a lasting positive impact in our communities.

What is a “mentor”? An experienced person in a company, organization, college, or school who trains and counsels those new to a situation or position.
Why is mentoring important to the success of our District? We must ensure that Kiwanians who accept leadership positions at the District, Division and Club levels are fully prepared to be successful in their new roles.
Why is mentoring important to the success of our District? Personal growth and development is one of the greatest personal benefits Kiwanis offers its members and potential members.

Effective mentoring takes time. That is why Kiwanis develops its leaders through mentoring and succession planning. This is a look at succession planning within E. C. and C.
Be a positive role model. • Review the current job description and arrange to have it updated if necessary, in accordance with appropriate procedures.
Connect with your successor as soon as they are elected or appointed to their new position. • Know the date your successor will assume their role in accordance with the prescribed succession planning.

Meet with your successor regularly to discuss the role and responsibilities of the position

Be honest about the time commitment involved. • Be honest about challenges or concerns you are aware of related to the position. No surprises!
Be open to your successor’s new ideas; we do not always have to do things the same way.
Motivate with positive feedback. Guide with thoughtful feedback.
Be respectful of the time it may take your successor to learn the duties of the position.
A truly great mentor strives to help their successor surpass their own success.
