Data call results • Missing data: • No data from Greece • Spain submission much more incomplete compared to previous year: no capacity, effort, volume and value of landings by species, capital values and investments • France submission missing all landings and effort for 2008 and 2009 – was provided at the 11th hour but not through formal channel • UK transversal data not submitted until end of first WG • Incomplete picture and timescales affected • Data quality: • usual problems and some questionable economic performance results for Bulgaria, Romania, Cyprus, Malta, Slovenia

EU fleet results summary - 2010 • Capacity continues to decrease • Total fuel consumption decreased • Slight increase in both the volume and value landed • Herring landings highest in terms of volume but slight decrease compared to 09 • Norway lobster highest in terms of value and slight increase compared to 09 • Average 1st sale prices increased 6.3% in 2010 • Total income (excluding Greece) in 2010: €7 billion, 2.6% increase • Crew wages decreased 7%, 11% increase in fuel costs compared to 2009, result of steady increase in fuel prices during 2010 • EU fleet moved from overall loss making position to post a profit in 2010 • Gross Value Added (GVA); €3.4 billion (5.7% increase), Gross profit; €1.2 billion (39.5% increase); Net profit (€288 million (increase of €300 million) • Including direct subsidies, net profit increases to €414 million

  15. 2011 Projections • Total fleet income increased in 10 out of the 13 Member States. • GVA as a proportion of total income increased in 7 out of 12 Member States • Gross and net profits as a proportion of total income increased in 8 out of 13 Member States. • Improved economic performance is expected in 2011 for around three quarters of the national fleets analysed.

Development of trade in fishing rights • For those MS where tradable rights have been established, the value of fishing rights have become a significant share of fishing companies capital. • In many fleet segments the value of fishing rights are higher than the tangible asset value. • Majority of trade takes place in the over 12m sector. • Rights are leased from individuals and other entities out-with the active fleet – net cost to the active fleet • Leasing costs can be considerable for active vessels and can significantly reduce profit levels • Fleet consolidation has taken place in almost all Member States where trade in fishing rights has been allowed to develop (Denmark, • Estonia, United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Sweden)
