A Comparison Between Pneumatic Actuator and Hydraulic Actuator.

An actuator is a system, component or device that converts energy into either a motion or force. Primarily, it is a mover and it can move or control a mechanism, like opening a valve. Here is a Brief Comparison between Pneumatic Actuator and Hydraulic Actuator.<br>

  1. How Pneumatic Actuator Differs From Hydraulic Actuator? WWW.DASSERVICESINC.COM

  2. Introduction An actuator is a system, component or device that converts energy into either a motion or force. Basically, its a mover and it can move or control a mechanism, like opening a valve. For actuator to work, it needs a control signal from a control system and an energy source. Its operations and main energy source could be from pressurized fluid, pressurized air or from electricity. The main thing is that when it receives a control signal, it simply converts it into a bigger mechanical or moving motion. So based on its source of energy, there could be any of these three actuators: Electrical Actuator, Pneumatic Actuator, and Hydraulic Actuator, but I will focus my discussion in this article on how pneumatic actuator differs from hydraulic actuator. 3. Pneumatic Actuator It is known as a pneumatic system is powered by pressurized air. It is made up of a piston inside a hollow cylinder in which pressure from an external compressor or manual pump moves the piston. The cylinder moves along the axis of the piston, as the pressure increases, thereby creating a linear force. Then the piston can return to its original position through a spring-back force or by simply supplying fluid to the other side of that piston. WWW.DASSERVICESINC.COM

  4. Advantages of Pneumatic Actuator It is good for low pressure and low speed work, as it works at a low speed and pressure. This in a way increases its accuracy as it can generate a precise linear motion with accuracy It does not use hazardous materials and so it could be used in areas of extreme temperatures. Also, pneumatic actuators meet machine safety and explosion protection requirements Their cost is low compared to other actuators, easy to maintain, have durable components and are not usually lightweight.  WWW.DASSERVICESINC.COM

  5. Disadvantages of Pneumatic Actuator They are less efficient compared to other actuators when it involves work that requires high pressure and speed Their efficiency and accurate control need proportional regulators and valves and this makes the costs to be on the high side and increase their complexity. The air can be contaminated with oil or lubricants which could result in downtime and maintenance issues.  WWW.DASSERVICESINC.COM

  6. Hydraulic Actuators It is made up of a piston inside a hollow cylinder in which pressure from an external compressor or manual pump moves the piston. The cylinder moves along the axis of the piston, as the pressure increases, thereby creating a linear force. Then the piston can return to its original position through a spring-back force or by simply supplying fluid to the other side of that piston. WWW.DASSERVICESINC.COM

  7. Advantages of Hydraulic Actuators They are used for high-force operations as they can produce forces that are 25 times greater than what pneumatic actuators can produce. They can hold force and torque constant even when the pump is not supplying more fluid. Their pumps and motors can be located at a considerable distance away with minimal loss of power. They have high horsepower-to-weight ratio. WWW.DASSERVICESINC.COM

  8. Disadvantages of Hydraulic Actuators They leak fluids thereby reducing their efficiency, makes the environments dirty and could damage other components of the hydraulic system.  Hydraulic actuators require many component parts which give rise to linear motion systems that are difficult to accommodate since they are large.
