  1. COMPASS N W E S Weekly Publication of the Rotary Club of Arlington North “The Friendliest Club In Town” since June 4, 1982 January 10th, 2010 www.arlingtonnorthrotary.org Dec 20th Chandra Thompson"Arlington Life Shelter" Our Mission The Arlington Life Shelter shepherds homeless men, women and children towards a lifestyle of self-sufficiency. Our ApproachThe Arlington Life Shelter is not just a place to stay and get a meal.  It is a place to begin removing the roadblocks and rebuilding the confidence and skills required to return to self-sufficiency.  The Board of Directors, volunteers and staff have high expectations for the homeless men, women and children served by the agency, giving them constant support to meet those expectations. Developing an effective, therapeutic relationship with each individual or family member is the most essential component of the services provided at the Arlington Life Shelter.  Staff members partner with each resident to develop a measurable service plan focusing on their strengths, their abilities to grow and their capacities to take control of their lives.  A coordinated, team approach is used to identify and address all of the needs of residents in a flexible, holistic manner. 3. Mark Your Calendars for January 28th: The members of the Flower Mound Rotary Club invite all the members of your club to our 5th annual Vine and Dine Fundraiser.  It will be a fun event with great food, live music, wine stroll and live auction.  Please visit www.flowermoundwinestroll.com.  We look forward to seeing you at our event!  Thank you very much. (Continued from page 1): Greg was also gracious to answer some candid questions about how the legal world. Some include: What about the limits on settlements? Greg told us of a man who lost his arms and legs due to negligence (and unneeded surgery). With today’s limits, it’s limited to lost income (about 2 million dollars) and a maximum of $250,000 for his suffering. After paying off the lawyers and other expenses he got about $500,000 – far short of what he should have gotten. Many parts of the legal world have gone to mediation, what about hospitals/doctors, the insurance companies, and the injured? Although it works elsewhere, it doesn’t work here. Typically, the hospitals and insurance companies see no profit in compromising when a long fight might very well defeat their opponents at much lower cost. The lawyers for the injured make big money with a big settlement and long drawn out legal work. Neither side is motivated to settle (except maybe the injured and the doctors)!
