Today… By the end of this session you will have will have: • an understanding of the different levels of service user involvement in all aspects of the speech and language therapy profession • developed a list of strategies and questions to establish service users goals for therapy and views on the service

  7. “No decision about me without me” Patients will receive greater choice and control so that services become more responsive and designed around the patient, rather than the patient having to fit around the services

  11. Involving service users in campaigning Sharing good news stories in the media Attending events and meeting VIPs Being part of a delegation meeting decision makers Designing a speech bubble or other method for sharing their experience and ideas.

If that one combination has helped just one person to understand the importance of Speech and Language Therapy then it will have been worth it”

  18. Choose one of these scenarios 7yr old girl with severe language delay just started at a language unit attached to a mainstream school. 11yr old boy diagnoses with high functioning ADS. He has difficulty interacting with peers and often gets into trouble at school due to ‘behaviour issues’. 16yr old boy with a moderate stammer. Had speech therapy when he was initially diagnosed when he was 4yrs old. He is now keen to have more therapy as he feels it is effecting is social life. 18yr old boy with cerebral palsy. He has just been given a new AAC device and you are starting therapy to develop his use of this.

  19. Choose one of these scenarios 33 yr old female teacher with severe voice impairment. Has had significant amount of time off work due to this and she feels that she has lost confidence in the classroom 61 yr old male who had a stroke resulting in moderate expressive and receptive aphasia and dysphagia 80yr old female with early stage Parkinson’s disease presenting with speech difficulties 73yr old male with early stages of dementia is concerned about how he will manage in his home setting

Choose one of these scenarios Mother of child aged 6 with SLI who is very concerned about his progress in school Wife of a 30yr old man who has had a TBI resulting in cognitive communication impairment. English is a second language for both Brother and main carer of a 19yr old man with moderate learning difficulties cares for his brother in his own home Carer in a nursing home wants to know how he can support a resident who has Alzheimer's disease and has difficulty with eating and drinking
