  1. Uganda Genocide Jack Irvine Period 6 2-27-14 Genocide Project

  2. Background Information • Start date - Nobody really knows, but it is thought to be in the later 1980’s • End - Still going on • Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) led by Kony • Started in Uganda and now nobody really knows where Kony and where his terror is happening • Kony ordered the abduction of children to become child soldiers and sex slaves in which the “soldiers” often had to kill their own parents. An estimated 20,000-60,000 children became part of Kony’s group • Kony uses force and violence to get his way • He cuts off the children’s ears and nose and then forces them to eat their own flesh

  3. “Kony 2012” • In the year of 2012 • Jason Russell and the Invisible Children Organization • In order to spread awareness about Kony’s acts and to try to make this whole problem led by Kony to end by 2012 • Basically the whole world now became aware of who Kony was and what he was doing to young innocent people, mostly children • We were not able to stop Kony by 2012, he is still “on the loose” with all of his terror he is presenting to innocent young people. We even sent 100 U.S. troops to help the Ugandan military to catch Kony, but it did not help enough in order to catch him by the goal of 2012 • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y4MnpzG5Sqc

  4. Visual Imagery in “Kony 2012” • All of the young children were abducted while they were sleeping • This starts their unknown journey of torture and pain ahead • I can see the fear in all of the individual’s eyes when being taken from their “normal life” • Their lives will most certainly never be the same again, if they survive… • The video has a powerful tone

  5. Auditory Imagery in Night • “The wheels began to grind, we were on our way” (Wiesel 22) • All of the Jews on the train car began to start their unknown long journey of torture ahead • This image is significant for the Jews that were entering their future unknown torture because you could hear train wheels that started to move to their first concentration camp • This piece of imagery has a powerful tone, but in a different way

  6. How the Two Pieces of Imagery Compare • Both foreshadow that something bad will happen to the genocide victims • Both imply problems abrewing • Night and “Kony 2012” foreshadow a long journey ahead • Both pieces of imagery create an uneasy feeling for the victims and their journeys • Both pieces of imagery created a powerful tone

  7. Motif in “Kony 2012” • Death • All of the children abducted were forced to be sex slaves and children soldiers • These dangerous situations often resulted in death • Death is a common idea that is repeated over and over throughout the video “Kony 2012” • This represented a terror type tone

  8. Motif in “Night” • Death • “We jumped at the sound of the shot. Falling to the ground, his face stained by the soup, the man writhed a few seconds at the base of the cauldron, and then he was still” (Wiesel 59-60). • People were getting shot for minor crimes • It really made the people who were in the Holocaust genocide pay attention to little things that could get themselves shot and killed on the spot • This represented a sorrowful type of tone • Death was very common throughout the Holocaust with varied ways such as hanging, starvation, dehydration, and being shot by an S.S. officer

  9. How the two motifs compare • Symbolize something bad in a horrible time • Not good for anybody • The motif death shows terror and a sorrowful tone • Both motifs foreshadow a painful life changing journey ahead
