  2. Objective The purpose of this is to learn the history of soccer in the MLS and the regulations and rules of soccer. After learning the material there will be a practice quiz for you to take. Next week will have a exam in class covering the topics in this lesson. Continue

  3. History of the MLS • In 1996 the MLS started with 10 teams. • In 1998 there was two more teams added the the league. Continue

  4. December 1993 22 cities in the United States submitted a bid for an MLS team. • Almost two years later in 1995 only 10 cities won the bid and got a soccer team. • The first season started in March of 1996. Continue

  5. The first champion of the MLS league was D.C. United in 1996. • The last team that has won the title is the Colorado Rapids. Continue

  6. MVP’s • The 1996 MVP was Carlos Valderrama. • The 2010 MVP was David Ferreiran. Continue Carlos Valderrama

  7. Record • The most goals ever scored by one player in a season was 27 in 1996 by Roy Lassiter. Continue Roy Lassiter

  8. Today there are 18 teams in the MLS. There are nine teams in each conference.   9. Regulations • The field is 100 yards long and 60 yards wide. • The field is divided into two halves by a center line. Continue

  10. Center Circle • There is a circle in the middle of the soccer field that is 10 yards. The opposing players have to stand outside the circle during a kick-off. Continue

  11. The Penalty Area • This is a rectangular box that is centered according to the goal. • The goalie can only use his hands in this area. • It is 44 yards wide and 18 yards deep. • The penalty dot is located in the center 12 yards away from the goal. Continue

  12. Corners • This is a one yard quarter circle marked on each corner of the field. • This area is marked with a corner flag. Continue

  13. The Soccer Goal • The goal is 24 feet wide and 8 feet tall. • They are located on each ends of the field exactly in the middle. Continue

  14. The Rules to Soccer • The game of soccer has a lot of rules. Most people learn the rules as they play the game as you will next week. Right now we are going to cover some of the basic soccer rules. Continue

  15. Number of Players on the Field • There are 11 players on the field at a time for each team. • The home team has to wear white jerseys. • The away team must wear solid color jerseys. Continue

  16. Substitutions • In a official soccer match a team is only allowed to make three substitutions a game. • In high school soccer there is no substitution limit. Continue

  17. Equipment • Players must wear shorts, a jersey, and long socks. • Players must wear approved shin-guards under their socks. • The cleats cannot have studs in front of the boot. Continue

  18. Duration of a Soccer Game • There are two 45 minutes half in professional soccer. • Teams switch end at half time. • Half time is 15 minutes long. Continue

Cards Yellow Card • A player can receive this for: • A hard foul • Multiple fouls • Arguing with the referee • A intentional hand ball • A yellow card is a warning to the player • Two yellow cards equal a red card. Red Card • A player can receive this for: • A very hard foul • Fouling a player on a breakaway • Fighting • After receiving two yellow cards • Red card kicks a player out of the game and the player is suspended for the next game.   20. Free-Kicks • A free-kick takes place after a foul has taken place. Opposing player must stand ten yards away from the ball. • If the foul is committed inside the penalty box, a team is rewarded a penalty kick. Continue

  21. Corner Kicks • When a team kicks the ball behind their own goal, the other team is rewarded a corner kick. • A player must kick the ball into play from the corner area. Continue

  22. Goal Kick • When a team kicks the ball behind the other teams goal, that goals team is rewarded a goal kick. • The ball has to be placed on the ground in front of the goal. • The ball has to be kicked in play. Continue
