  1. Paddling is the use of a wooden paddle as a punishment to spank or hit someone, usually on the buttocks Do-now Read the following statements. In your journal, write down the number of the statement and if you agree or disagree. Punishments at our school don’t seem to stop kids from misbehaving. If paddling* were allowed at our school, certain students would probably be paddled over and over. If a teacher or principal paddled me I would probably hate him or her. Paddling might be an effective punishment in certain cases.

  3. Review of do now If you agree with the statement stand up. If you strongly agree stand on your chair! If you disagree sit on the edge of your desk. If you strongly disagree sit on the floor!

  4. Brainstorm + evidence search • Complete the graphic organizer with your own ideas on if corporal punishment should be allowed in BCPS • As you read, look for evidence to complete the bottom half of the graphic organizer. Fill in the most compelling pieces of evidence during of after reading.

  5. Checklist for debate preparation • Opening statement: overview of your stance and argument, should be engaging! • Main arguments: evidence and reasoning that supports your stance • Questions for the other group: 3-5 questions to learn more about the opposing side’s opinion; should be able to use questions to illuminate flaws in their argument • Closing statement: after all the evidence has been presented, a statement that presents why your stance ultimately is superior and what should be done to make your beliefs become reality in Baltimore City Schools.
