They make a weary world smile. He a was youthful, dynamic leader and a loving father. • His term in office is called Camelot • CIA’s plan to invade Cuba with Cuban exiles (against Castro). Castro was alerted about the Bay of Pigs invasion because his intelligence/technology was greater than ours. • Bay of Pigs was a slaughter. Castro restates his allegiance to the spread of communism. • October 1962 USA photographed Soviet missile sites in Cuba (aimed at the US). Kennedy demanded their removal. We launched a blockade around Cuba. Khrushchev removed his missiles and Kennedy vows not to invade Cuba and to remove USA missiles from Turkey • Soviet Union launched Sputnik, the first manned space craft • United States sends Alan Sheppard into space and next John Glenn (the first Americans to orbit the earth), Kennedy is determined to land a man on the moon • Germany-Berlin Wall is built to divide East and West Berlin. Serves as a symbol of the Cold War. • Kennedy makes an important statement that discrimination is a “moral issue as old as the scripture and as clear as the constitution” • Kennedy increases the number of military advisors in Vietnam to 16,000 • Kennedy Assassinated (November 22, 1963-Dallas, Texas) • Lee Harvey Oswald determined to be the assassin, he is jailed • Jackie Kennedy, “I should have guessed it would not last” • Lyndon Johson sworn in as President on Air Force One • Let Us Continue • Lyndon Johnson’s Presidency • War on poverty-Johnson was focused on the under privileged in America • Medicare bill is signed • Civil Rights legislation for no discrimination • Johnson strives for a Great Society that does not include racism or poverty • Escalates war in Vietnam after the hostile actions against the US in the Gulf of Tonkin (draft increases) • The escalation of the war diverts federal funding away from the “Great Society” programs • Protest increased after the invasion of Saigon (sit in and teach ins) • LBJ declines the Democratic party nomination for a second term as president because his approval ratings were so low as a result of the Vietnam war

Mayor Dailey is faced with the television spreading the police brutality on peaceful war protestors • Nixon wins Presidential election • Woodstock 400.000 attendants, “Rock & Roll and protest come together” 3 days long, the youth prove to be defiant and self-indulgent (some of the musicians: Mick Jagger, Grateful Dead, The Who and Santana), no violence occurred. • The Eagle Has Landed • 1968-In Paris (30,000) threated to topple the government and de Gaulle • In Russia Khrushchev is removed from power • Israel: 6 Day war: Israel topples Egypt, Jordan and Syria, takes the Gaza Strip and Jerusalem. “We have returned the holiest of our places-never to leave again” • July 20, 1969 Apollo 11 mission • Kennedy’s pledge comes true, US lands on the moon before 1970 • “The Eagle has Landed” and “One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind” • Astronauts Buzz Aldrin, Neil Armstrong, and Michael Collins • Most historic phone call of all time was between Nixon and the men on the moon • The Astronauts leave a piece of the Wright Brother’s plane on the moon and an American Flag • The Cold War accelerated our ability to reach the moon because it increased funding and technological advancements

April 30, 1970-the president sends troops into the country ofCambodia. • At Kent State University in the state of Ohio , nine students are injured and 4 die. • TV Show: All in the Family starring Carroll O’Connor as Archie Bunker. • In 1973, the United States withdraws from Vietnam. The United States lost 57,000 soldiers in the war. • April 30, 1975-the city of Saigon falls to the communist (becomes Ho Chi Mihn City) • Nixon visited the country of China in 1972 and then stopped at Moscow in Russia. • The SALT treaty is signed between the United States and Russia • Music: The Party’s Over Title: I AM NOT A CROOK • June 17, 1972-a break in takes place at the Watergate Hotel. It is the sight of the Democratic Headquarters (Woodward and Bernstein break the story in the newspaper) • July 1974(date) impeachment proceedings begin against Richard Nixon • Aug. 9, 1974(date) Nixon becomes the first US president to resign. • In 1976, the US celebrates its bicentennial • With John Travolta as its star, Saturday Night Fever introduces the disco scene. • Movies of the 70s: The Exorcist, Jaws, Star Wars, The Godfather, Rocky, True Grit, Dirty Harry and Superman • Music: Give Peace a Chance Title: Days of Terror • Terrorist began to highjack airplanes and take hostages. • At the Munich Olympics on Sept. 5, 1972, terrorist seized Israeli athletes. In all, 9 athletes die. • Mark Spitz won 7 gold medals in the sport of swimming • Uganda is led by Idi Amin. Hostages are held at the airport named Entebbe . • The Egyptian leader, Sadat, travels to Israel to discuss peace. • Egyptian & Israeli leaders travel to the US and sign the Camp David Peace Accords. • Three years later, Sadat is assassinated .

He took his followers to Guiana where 909 of them committed suicide. • The country of Iran goes from Shah to Ayatollah in leadership. • Nov. 4 (date) The US Embassy in Tehran is seized and 60 US hostages are taken. Total days the hostages held:444. Total American hostages freed:52 • Reagan becomes the president in 1980. John Lennon and his wife Yoko One moved to New York City where they had a son named Sean. On Dec. 8, 1980, Lennon was shot and killed at the age of 40 • Ronald Reagan was shot 2 months after his inauguration on March of 1981. Capturing the mood of the times, the movie Wall Street • War and Conflict • Margaret Thatcher sends troops to the Falkland Islands to retake the island from Argentine • Reagan sends troops to Grenada to rescue U.S medical students • Reagan sends Marines into Lebanon. Over 200 Marines were killed by Muslim terrorist. • April 14, 1986-Reagan attacks Libya and its leader Muammar el Khadafy • Dec. 1988-Flight 103 is downed over Lockerby, Scotland. Libyan agents are responsible • Nicaragua- contras and Sandinistas battle over control of the government • Iran and Iraq fight. The US becomes involved in the Iran-Contra arms deal. The US would sell arms to Iran to use against Iraq. The money would then be sent to the contras to use against the Sandinstas • Colonel Oliver North was a key figure in the Iran-contra affair • Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev sign the first missile reduction treaty in 1987 • Music: Just One of Those Things Title: THE STUFF OF FAIRY TALES • The Lady Diana Spencer marries Charles Prince of Wales and heir to the English throne on July 29, 1981. It is believed that 750 million people watched the wedding worldwide. Diana was 19 years old and Charles was 32 years old. • Princess Di turned her attention to charity work involving the disease AIDS. • As the AIDS epidemic spreads, actor Rock Hudson dies from the disease. Ryan White dies from AIDS as a result of a blood transfusion. He died at the age of 13. • Dr. David Ho will discover a treatment for HIV and be Time’s Man of the Year in 1996. • The biggest movie of the decade is ET.
Music: Everybody Hurts Title: HOLDING ON • Women of the 80s • Corazon Aquino takes over in the Philippines after Ferdinand Marcos is ousted from power. Corazon took on her husband’s leadership role after he was assassinated • Benazir Bhutto was the prime minister of Pakistan • Indira Ghandi was the leader of India. She was assassinated in 1984 by two of her Sikh bodyguards • Margaret Thatcher was prime minister of Great Britain • Dr. Sally Ride is the first American woman in space on June 18, 1983. • Christine McAuliffe, a teacher, is one of seven killed in the explosion aboard the Space Shuttle Challenger (name of shuttle) • In 1981, a right wing group attempts to overthrow King Juan Carlos of Spain. • While visiting with crowds in St. Peter’s Square in Rome, Pope John Paul II was shot and required 5 hours of surgery. He later visited the cell of his attacker and forgave him • The Pope returned to his native country of Poland in 1983. • Music: We Are the World Title: REACHING OUT • In 1984, Los Angeles hosted the Summer Olympics with many countries missing including the Soviet Union (The U.S boycotted the 1980 Olympics that were in the Soviet Union because the Soviets had invaded Afghanistan) • The flame was ignited by a former Olympic decathlete named Rafer Johnson. Medal winner for the US included Jackie Joiner, Carl Lewis and Mary Lou Retton • Bob Geldof organized Live-Aid concerts to raise money for Africa famine relief • In 1948, apartheid became law in South America. An early opponent of this law was Nelson Mandela. In 1964 he was sentenced to life in prison for sabotage. Examples of the policy of apartheid took place in the townships of Sharpville in 1960 and Soweto in 1976. While in prison, Winnie Mandela (wife) kept his message alive. F.W. de Klerk led the South African government when Nelson Mandela was freed in 1990. • Nelson Mandela will lead the movement in South Africa against the Apartheid Government • Music: Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 Title: SOLIDARITY • Lech Walesa becomes leader in Poland • In 1980, Lech Walesa led his Solidarity union in efforts to be recognized by the Polish government. The Communist party declared martial law and outlawed Solidarity. In 1989, the government legalized Solidarity and opened the country for free elections. Lech Walesa was elected president. He received the Noble Peace Prize and was Time’s Man of the Year. • Mikail Gorbachev • Russia faces problems • Russia was at war with Afghanistan. Over 16,000 soldiers were killed. In 1989 Gorbachev pulls out of Afghanistan • A nuclear power plant melts down at Chernobyl • Gorbachev wanted to rebuild the Soviet Union along democratic lines. He was awarded the Noble Peace Prize. He was opposed by the communist party in the Russian congress • Hungary opened its borders in 1989 • The Berlin Wall fell on Nov. 10, 1989. It separated East and West Germany • Technology: Nanosecond, modem, information super highway, fiber optics • Communication used at the end of the 80’s: Fax, computer and TV
Name: Celebrating the Century: 1990-1999 August 1990-Saddam Hussein sent 500,000 soldiers to invade Kuwait . Hussein defied the UN Coalition. He was then attacked in what is known as Desert Storm. The Gulf War lasted 43 days. The president during this time was George H.W. Bush • Music: Don’t Stop Thinking About Tomorrow Title: BABY BOOMERS IN THE WHITE HOUSE • Bill Clinton was 46 years old when elected in 1992. Clinton was the third youngest elected president. Clinton met President Kennedy thirty years earlier. • The ATF attacked a compound owned by the Branch Davidians in Waco, Texas. 5 Davidians and 4 agents were killed in the 51-day hold out. It ended tragically on April 19, 1993. Over 80 men, women and children perished in the flames. • On the second anniversary of the Waco tragedy, an explosion in Oklahoma City kills over 160 people. Evidence suggest this is retaliation to the Waco tragedy • Hillary Clinton takes on the task of changing the health care system in the U.S. • Kenneth Starr takes the lead role in investigating what became known as Whitewater • Music: 1999 Title: ACQUITTAL • In Jan. of 1999, the president was impeachment and acquitted. Kenneth Starr found in investigating the president, that Clinton was involved with a young intern named Monica Lewinsky. Bill Clinton becomes only the second president after Andrew Johnson to be impeached. • During the summer two baseball players kept America’s attention. Mark McGwire who played for the St. Louis Cardinals and Sammy Sosa who played for the Chicago Cubs. They were in a battle for the homerun record in Major League Baseball. McGwire hit 70 homeruns while Sosa hit 66. • Michael Jordan starred for his basketball team in the city of Chicago. He played for 13 seasons and led his team to the title 6 times. He is named MVP 6 times. He brought 10 billion to the economy according to Time magazine • Carrie Strugg performed in the sport of Gymnastics. The US won the Gold medal in the team competition for the first time n part due to her performance. • O.J. Simpson is accused of murdering his wife and Ron Goldman. The trial lasted for nine months • More than 300 million people watched the World Cup in Italy • Music: I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For Title: GIVING WAY • Gorbachev leads the Soviet Union as the decade begins. He is struggling to hold his country together and bring democracy to his people. There were 15 Soviet republics seeking independence. Boris Yeltsin replaces Gorbachev as the Soviet Union dissolves. Russia continues to suffer disappointing times. Life expectancy drops in Russia • Yeltsin must send 40,000 troops to Chechnya • Proliferation of nuclear weapons becomes the concern of the world. In 1999, China was accused of stealing designs for a nuclear warhead. The Chinese re-annexed Hong Kong from Great Britain.
Music: Star Wars Title: THE AMERICAN WAY • The pre-quell to Star Wars opens in 1999. Star Wars first appeared in 1977. The movies take American culture to the rest of the world • Michael Jackson is the King of Pop. Jackson has been on the American music scene for over two decades. • Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina declared their independence for greater Yugoslavia. Serbia the largest state, attacks to keep the break up from occurring. In 1992, the world learns of the ethnic cleansing in this area. The United Nations intervenes. The Serbian leader at the time is Slobodan Milosevic. American troops are deployed to help keep peace in Bosnia. • In March 1999, the UN and the US set out to stop atrocities in Serbia under Milosevic. In August 1914 WWI started in the Balkans. It is again a flash point in 1999. • Music: That’s What Friends Are For Title: DEMOCRACY ASCENDING • Nelson Mandela was released from prison on Saturday at 3 pm in South Africa. He calls for reconstruction. He is 71 years old. He has been in prison for three decades. In 1994, South Africa elects Mandela as president in free elections • In 1993 there was a promise of peace to the end of bloodshed in the Mid-east. The PLO and Israel recognize each other’s rights to exist in secret meetings in Norway. Peres and Arafat meet in Washington to finalize the talks. In Nov. 1995, Rabin, the prime minister of Israel, is by a right wing Palestinian. • Music: Someone to Watch Over Me Title: ENGLAND’S ROSE • The Prince and Princess of Wales have decided to end their marriage. • On August 31, both Diana and her new love died in a car crash. She was only 36 years old. • There are over 100 democracies in the world today • Louis Armstrong closes the program as images from the entire series are shown.
