Taking Action for Climate Change: Solutions for a Sustainable Future

Climate change is happening faster than predicted, with devastating consequences such as extinction of reefs, sea-level rise, and abandonment of coastal cities. Our actions in the next 10-15 years matter. As a community of faith, we can make a difference through household actions that reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Join us in addressing climate change through education, advocacy, and action for stewardship of creation.

  1. Climate Change is Happening Faster than Predicted ONE Already there. The planet has warmed 1˚C since the Industrial Revolution. Goal of Paris Agreement. Extinction of the world’s reefs, sea-level rise of several meters, abandonment of the Persian Gulf. “Long-term disaster.” “Short-term disaster.” Forests in the Arctic. Loss of most coastal cities. Current realistic minimum. Europe in permanent drought. Deserts cover China, India, Bangladesh. American Southwest uninhabitable. TWO THREE FOUR Our actions in the next 10-15 years matter

Environmental justice is social justice Those least responsible are first and hardest hit by climate change: • 40 million global climate refugees • For every 1˚C increase in global average temperature, a 10% reduction in world’s grain crops • World Bank: climate-related disasters push 26 million into poverty every year

The Episcopal Church Roll-out TEC has adopted the tracker and will be rolling out the program nationally • Diocese engage in the Care of Creation Pledge and tracker • Diocesan rollout team receives training by webinar • Resources include presentations, guides & demos • Diocesan team reaches out to congregations • Congregations launch to parishioners

Steps for Congregation Rollout • Church Climate Champion and Diocesan Team Meet • Climate Champion gains Church Leadership support • Identify member(s) of the Church who will be Coordinating • Tracker Coordinator(s) • Plan & Host Launch Meeting (presentation, quick guide) • Plan & Host follow up meetings • Celebrate and share success through newsletters, tracker page, etc. • Incorporate tracker outreach into other events
