aesthetic (as THET ik) • having to do with the appreciation of beauty • The arrangement of paintings in the museum had to do primarily with aesthetic considerations; as long as paintings looked good together, it didn’t matter who painted them or when they were painted.
decorous (DEK er us) • proper; marked by good taste • The class was well-behaved and the substitute was grateful for their decorous conduct.
embellish (em BELL ish) • to make beautiful by ornamenting; to decorate • We embellished the account of our vacation by including descriptions of the many colorful people and places we visited.
idyllic (id IL ik) • simple and carefree • Since they have no responsibilities, house pets enjoy an idyllic life.
medley (MED lee) • an assortment or a mixture, especially of musical pieces • At the wedding, the band played a medley of all the songs the bride and groom enjoyed.
mural (MYUR ul) • a big painting applied directly to a wall • The mural on the wall of the library featured portraits of every librarian that had worked there.
opulent (AHP yuhlunt) • exhibiting a display of great wealth • Dances given at the king’s palace are always very opulent affairs.
ornate (or NAYT) • elaborately ornamented • The carved wood was so ornate that you could examine it several times and still notice things you had not seen before.
pristine (pris TEEN) • not spoiled; pure • The Model T was in pristine condition; it looked as though it had just come off the line yesterday.
serene (suh REEN) • calm • The seaside resort provided a much-needed vacation in a serene locale.
lucid (LOO sid) • easily understood • We love our teacher because he provides lucid explanations of difficult concepts.
