This history of Indian Coin is vast and every coin lover is deeply interested to know more. • Indian coins came into existence during 6th century BC and because of that they have a marvelous history attached to it and also the coins went through major changes under various rulers • The real change was only felt during the Mughal Period as it brought about consolidated monetary system.

  3. Sher Shah Suri, an Afghan, who ruled Delhi for a short duration, came up with the system of tri-metalism which characterized the Mughal Coinage. • The Coins of India went through significant changes during the Mughal Era, Sher Shah issued a coin of silver which was termed the Rupiya.

  4. Along with Silver Rupiya, gold coins were issued too and they were called Mohur, weighing 169 grains and copper coins called Dam. • The design and minting process of coins was highly creative and innovative during the Mughal Period.

  5. It was during the reign of King Akbar that the coin designs came to a maturity. • Coins in India saw some major creativity when Jehangir took personal interest in the coinage as ornamentation and floral scrollwork were introduced.

  6. The Mughal Coinage brought about zodiacal signs, portraits and excellent calligraphy. • The Mughal rulers were creatively triggered and embraced change with courage and that’s why the Coins of India during the Mughal period flourished.
