Getting Started • Create a user account • Go to https://app.joinhandshake.com/employer_registrations/new to create an employer account.  You can view the details of this process, with screenshots, by checking out How to Create a User Account • If you are a KSU employee creating an account, please view step-by-step instructions at https://support.joinhandshake.com/hc/en-us/articles/115011549548. Information for recruiting student assistants can be found at http://careers.kennesaw.edu/studenthiring.php • You will receive an email with a link to create your password BEFORE you can continue in the process. After clicking the confirmation, you’ll be able to follow the next steps. • Join your existing company on Handshake, or create a new one • Your company should pull up based on the domain of your email address, if it is already in Handshake. If it isn't, you should see the option to create a new company profile. You can learn more about the new company creation process here.  • You MUST use a corporate email address to be approved to recruit at KSU • Request to connect with schools • Handshake is great because many different schools utilize the system. It is not specific to KSU.  • You can choose schools during your sign-up process, and can always select more at any time afterwards. Please give us 2 business days to review your account once you have requested to add KSU.

Ways to Recruit- in Order • Post open jobs/internships/co-ops in Handshake • Participate in events & on-campus interviews • Start with information tables and Job and Internship Fairs • Post events off-campus in Handshake • Schedule on-campus interviews • Information sessions/Career Exploration Nights • Search students within Handshake

  12. Best Practices- Job postings • Job title: Include specifics so the student knows from looking at it, if they’ll want to read more. Ex: “Fall 2019 Tax Intern” is better than “Tax Intern” • Job description: Utilize the different fonts, colors, links, etc. in Handshake to make your posting stand out or to highlight specific pieces of your job description • Pay: Put something! Students are more likely to apply if they have at least a salary range. In Handshake you cannot put a range, but you can put your highest or lowest number and include a range in the job description. • Required documents: Be aware that any documents that you require must be submitted by the student for approval by our office BEFORE their application will go through to you (including transcripts, cover letters, etc.). Be sure that you need this before selecting it on your job posting. • Major categories: Selecting major categories will pull all associated majors for students searching by major. It is important to select ALL major categories if you’re open to any major.

Best Practices- Job Description Most important aspects of a job for students: • Opportunity to develop job-specific skills • Opportunity to develop applied skills • Job security (loyalty from their employer) • Friendly co-workers • Good benefits package (that match their values) • Recognition for good performance • Clearly defined assignments • Opportunity to improve the community • Clear agenda of corporate social responsibility • Diversity-conscious employer Source: Class of 2017 Student Survey, National Association of Colleges and Employers.

Best Practices- Events on Campus Requirements to host an on-campus event: • You must have been recruiting with KSU for at least one full semester • You must have an active job posted in Handshake Best Practices: • Check our Important Dates to make sure your event falls in a good time of the semester • You can post your on-site or virtual events in Handshake through the Events tab • You can host up to four information tables on campus each semester (2 on each campus maximum) • You must request an on-campus event at least 3 weeks in advance • Important to include in the description: majors for which you are recruiting and the Handshake Job ID(s) for any open position(s)

Best Practices- On-Campus Interviews Requirements to conduct on-campus interviews: • You must have been recruiting with KSU for at least one full semester • You must have an active job posted in Handshake Best practices: • When selecting the Career Center, choose based on the majors you are recruiting. • Marietta: College of Computing and Software Engineering, College of Architecture and Construction Management, Southern Polytechnic College of Engineering and Engineering Technology • Kennesaw: Bagwell College of Education, Coles College of Business, College of Humanities and Social Sciences, College of Science and Mathematics, College of the Arts, University College, WellStar College of Health and Human Services • Always give us an alternate date when requested • Attaching a job to the request will give your position more exposure to students • Preselect Schedule- use this option when you have more time and would like Handshake to take care of the scheduling for you. You select the candidates you’re interested in, and they’ll use Handshake to schedule an interview. • We will deadlines based off approved interview date(s) and will be able to edit if necessary • Room Only- use this option when you would like to build your own schedule from in-person meetings, after a career fair, or are in a tight time crunch.

  17. Best Practices- Searching students • You must have a trust score of an 80 or above to have access • Need help raising your trust score? Read this article from Handshake • Sort by things like major, graduation date, GPA to narrow your results

Internships & Co-ops Alternating Co-op • Undergraduates commit to work with the same employer in a major-related paid position for three semesters over a five semester period, alternating between full-time work and full-time academic coursework on an every-other-semester basis. Undergraduates must have 30 hours of coursework completed and a 2.5 GPA to begin the program and must maintain a 2.5 GPA throughout.  • Graduate students work two semesters over a three semester period, alternating between work and school by semester on a full-time basis. They must have completed 9 credit hours to participate and maintain a 3.0 GPA throughout. Sophomores, juniors, seniors and graduate students are eligible to participate. Positions are typically paid; academic credit is rarely available.  Parallel Co-op • Students work for at least two semesters with employers in positions that provide direct related experience to their academic majors. They may receive academic credit for participation and must be paid a wage.  • The position may be part-time or full-time, but should include a minimum of ten hours of work per week. Sophomores, juniors, seniors, and graduate students are eligible to participate if they have a declared eligible major, at least 30 completed undergraduate credit hours, and a 2.5 GPA. Internship • An internship is employment that closely relates to the student’s major and is usually one semester in length. Students may also receive academic credit for their participation (with an eligible major) and the position may be paid or unpaid, depending on the major. • The internship may be part-time or full-time, but should include a minimum of ten hours of work per week. This program is available to juniors, seniors, and graduate students. GPA, credit hours, and other academic requirements vary by major.

Owl Job Shadow How Does it Work? • Job shadowing opportunities will be available at a variety of companies during the dedicated job shadow week each semester (see "Important Dates" on the right for the dedicated weeks). • Each shadow experience will last up to 6 hours on one day of the job shadowing week. • Students will apply for the Job Shadow program and list their top location choices. If selected, they will be matched with an employer based on the student’s listed preferences. Our team reviews every application to make sure that students are matched with each company appropriately. The objectives of this program include: • Observation opportunities to see what a career field looks like “in real life” • Connect classroom learning with workplace experience • Broaden the view of opportunities for students at many different companies • Create a starting point for learning how to network with professionals • Practice professionalism and business etiquette • Help to define potential career paths after graduation
