  22. Journal #22 • Copy this: • Nicotine is a type of drug called a stimulant. Stimulants are drugs that increase the activity of the nervous system. In smokers, nicotine enters the blood mainly through the lungs. • The major short term effects of nicotine use are increased heart rate, increased blood pressure, and changes in the brain that may lead to addiction.
