  1. JOURNAL • Describe what a tobacco advertisement looks like. • List 5 places you where you would see tobacco advertisements. • List 5 places where you would NOT see tobacco advertisements.

JOURNAL Answer the following questions using your tobacco ad: • Describe your ad in detail (product, people, colors, etc) • Who do you think is the target audience for your ad and why? • What does the surgeon general’s warning say? • Where did you find your ad? • Do you think tobacco advertising should be completely banned? Why or why not?

  3. Tobacco and Society: • Tobacco is a HUGE business in the United States. • Tobacco companies spend $42 million on advertising and promotions EVERY DAY!!!!!

  4. Tobacco companies are constantly losing customers everyday because they are quitting or dying. • Therefore they want to attract new users. WHO DO THEY WANT TO ATTRACT????

  5. Children & Teenagers!!!! • Children and teens represent the most profitable market. * Children and teens have their whole life ahead of them, that’s why tobacco companies want them as their new customers (a customer for life).

  6. Why are children and teens so valuable to the tobacco companies?????? • The majority of smokers begin before the age of 18. • 80% before age 18 • 90% before age 20

  8. Tobacco Addiction Despite the high personal costs and health risks a large number of people continue to smoke or chew tobacco. This is because they have formed an addiction.

  9. Addiction- a physical or psychological need for a drug.

  10. Physical Dependence- • A type of addiction in which the body itself feels a direct need for a drug. • Nicotine affects body temperature, heart rate, digestion, and muscle tone. • Tobacco users DO NOT feel normal unless their body is under the influence of nicotine.

  11. Psychological Dependence- -an addiction in which the mind sends the body a message that it needs the drug (nicotine). - Events , situations, and habits trigger a desire to use tobacco.

  12. Nicotine addiction is the most common form of drug addiction in the United States.

  14. Withdrawal- • The physical and psychological symptoms that occur when someone stops using an addictive substance.

  15. Physical symptoms of Withdrawal: • Nicotine cravings • Headaches • Shakes • Fatigue • Increased appetite • nausea

  16. Psychological symptoms of withdrawal: • Feeling irritable • Nervous • Anxious • Sad • Trouble thinking • Trouble sleeping

  17. Question: What is it called when a person is standing next to someone who is smoking and they are inhaling the smoke from the cigarette??

  18. Secondhand Smoke The air that has been contaminated by tobacco smoke.

  19. 2 types of secondhand smoke: • Mainstream smoke - the smoke that the smoker inhales and exhales into the air. • Sidestream smoke – smoke coming off the burning end of the cigarette.

  20. Question : Which type of secondhand smoke is more harmful? Sidestream!!!

  21. Sidestream smoke contains twice as much tar and nicotine as mainstream smoke.

  22. Secondhand smoke can cause pneumonia and bronchitis. • Infants and children who are exposed to secondhand smoke have more colds, allergies, ear infections and asthma than children who are not exposed to secondhand smoke.

  23. Pregnancy & Tobacco Woman who smoke while pregnant increase their risk of having: • a low birth weight baby • a premature delivery ** the risk of SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome) is higher in homes in which the parents smoke!
