  2. Why we chose this issue? • Session 5: Mother and baby When we explored the topic of breastfeeding we found that there are many benefits that people of Hackney are unaware of. We thought that this would be a key issue to promote so that people can understand the importance of breastfeeding.

  3. ADVANTAGES For the baby: • Protects against infection and illnesses • Develop a bond with your baby • Meets all baby’s nutritional needs • Enhances development and immunity For the mother: • Cheap • Helps you lose weight DISADVANTAGES • Becomes difficult for the mother to leave her baby • Can’t measure the quantity of nutrients the baby is receiving exactly.

  4. Disadvantages of Formula Milk • Expensive • Nutritional quality reduced • Baby has increased risk of obesity • Confusion about what type of formula milk to use

  5. A Few Statistics… • Between 2000 and 2005, the rate of breastfeeding rose by 7% in the UK • Overall, only 35% of UK babies are being exclusively breastfed at one week, 21% at six weeks, 7% at four months and 3% at five months.

  6. Health Promotion Interventions • HINCT (Hackney & Islington National Childbirth Trust)‏ HINCT provide trained counsellors to help women establish and continue breast feeding. They are able to provide information and support for mothers to help overcome problems. The service is held regularly in Hackney and is completely free! • Midwives & Health visitors Every mother & mother-to-be will have contact with these health professionals and so they are able to give one-to-one advice about the benefits and disadvantages of breast feeding. • Leaflets/Posters These can be placed in children’s centres such as Sebright & in GP surgeries etc.
