  1. BREASTFEEDING Amaro.Amolenda.Andal.Ang.Antonio

  2. Only 16% of mothers in the Philippines breastfeed their babies, despite the health benefits of doing so. Why is this and will it change?

  3. Human Milk • Preferred feed for all infants • Sufficient to provide nutrient needs until 6 months of life: should be continued until two years and beyon supplemented with complementary foods

  4. Physiology of Lactation • Prolactin Reflex • Stimulation of breast for milk secretion • Its concentration increases rapidly during sucking • ‘Let down’ or Milk ejection reflex • Tactile stimulation of the nipple-areolar complex by the suckling infant leads to afferent signals to the hypothalamus that trigger release of oxytocin.

  5. Physiology of Lactation

  6. Phases of Lactation • Mammogenesis • Pregnancy is associated with a remarkable growth in the size of breast. The enhanced size of breast in pregnancy is due to the growth of ducts and lobuloalveolar (ducts and segments) systems in breast.

  7. Phases of Lactation • Lactogenesis • Stage I: 12 weeks before parturition • Stage II: 2-3 days postpartum • Stage III: 12-30 days postpartum
