  5. Dutch East India Company The powerful Netherlands company that drove out its competitors and controlled trade with Asia

  6. Ming Dynasty A series of rulers who gave China peace and prosperity 1368-1644 and sought to minimize outside influence

  7. Manchus People from northeast of the Great Wall who invaded China in 1644 when the Ming dynasty had weakened

  8. Qing The Chinese dynasty that expanded China to include Taiwan, Chinese Central Asia, Mongolia, and Tibet

  9. Oda Nobunaga A Japanese lord who seized the imperial capital, Kyoto, in 1568 and sought to “rule the empire by force”

  10. Hideyoshi The general who used brute force and alliances to dominate Japan 1590 and invade Korea.

  11. Tokugawa Shogunate The administration established by Ieyasu, who unified Japan and restored the rule of law

  12. Prince Henry He set up a navigation school and helped Portugal open trading posts on Africa’s west coast

  13. Hongwu He commanded the rebel Chinese army that drove out the Mongols in 1368 and established agricultural reforms

  14. Yonglo A Ming dynasty ruler who moved the royal court to Beijing and launched the first voyage of exploration 1405.

  15. Zheng He A Chinese Muslim admiral whose huge expedition fleets reached Southeast Asia and Africa

  16. Kangxi The Qing emperor 1661 who listened to the common people and led his troops to victory over the Mongols

  17. Daimyo Warrior chiftans who became lords in a Japanese feudal system that lasted from 1467to 1568

  18. Haiku Japanese verse poetry that presents an image in a 5-7-5 syllable pattern and a three-line verse form

  19. Kabuki Theater in which actors in elaborate costumes use music, dance, and mime to perform skits about life

  20. Caravel A sturdy sailing vessel designed to withstand long voyages; it had both triangular and square sails
