  6. Population Demographics • B.C.’s Population is aging. • B.C.’s Population will be increasingly concentrated among people ages 40 and above, a significant departure from previous decades. • The median age is projected to increase from 38 years in 2001 to 47 years by 2036.

  7. Population Demographics • The aging population will strongly impact the province of BC as the number of older workers and retirees exceeds the number of children and younger workers. • By 2010, it is projected that the age 65 and older cohort will surpass the age 18-29 cohort for the first time in the province’s history.

Population Demographics • The aging of the baby boom generation (1945-1960s) is of great significance as they retire and the supply of young workers simultaneously shrinks. • The younger cohorts in B.C. are currently declining. • The effect(s): * Shrinking in education system K-12 (school closures). * Increase demand on the health care system.

  9. Labour Market Outlook • BC Demographics • Labour force will start to shrink in 2009 as Baby Boomers Retire +50 yr. will grow 44% (between 2005-2020) +21-50 yr. growth 5% -18-20 yr. will decline by 2%

  10. Projected Job Growth by Skill/Education • The projected annual job growth by skill level and education in BC is highest amongst those with more education and/or training.

  11. Projected Job Openings by Skill/Education • The projected job openings by skill and/or education in B.C. is highest in the Some Post Secondary Education group (44%), not the University Group (30%).

  12. Projected Job Vacancies, 2005-2015 • The projected job vacancies in the goods-producing sector is highest in construction, manufacturing, mining, forest and agriculture. • The projected job vacancies in the services-producing sector is highest in health care and social assistance, accommodation and food service, retail, education and professional business services.

  13. The Third Option Rocks! • According to Stats Canada, of all secondary school graduates, about 20% actually attend university. • Post secondary does not necessarily mean university. • Major employers hire both university and non-university grads and there are thousands of rewarding jobs via non-university pathways. • Students should explore the third option: Skilled technical and trades jobs. www.bcbusinesscouncil.ca

  17. Career Program Options • Applied Business Technology (ABT) • UFV Program Offered at Abbotsford Collegiate • Students begin in grade 11 or grade 12 • Employment Prospects Include: School District, Legal, and Medical Offices

Career Program Options • Architectural Drafting • UFV Program Offered through Abbotsford Collegiate • Students begin in grade 12 and take the program at the new Trades & Technology Centre in Chilliwack • Students earn a 1 year certificate from UFV • Employment Prospects include working in Architectural Drafting Firms, Engineering Offices, Design Companies.

Career Program Options • Health & Human Services • UFV Program offered at Abbotsford Collegiate • Students begin in grade 11 • Complete 1 year of post secondary credit • Suitable for students who are strong academically • Program is a survey program: for careers in Early Childhood Education, Teaching, Nursing, Social Work,Dental Assistant, Dental Hygienist, Paramedic

  20. Career Program Options • Automotive Technician • UFV Program offered through Abbotsford Collegiate • 1 year program - students start in grade 12 • Program is offered at the new Trades & Technology Centre in Chilliwack • Students complete a 1 year Automotive Tech Certificate

  23. Career Program Options • Electrical • UFV Program offered at Abby Collegiate • 1 year program • Students begin in grade 11, complete in gr. 12 • Complete a 1 year UFV Certificate

  24. Career Program Options • Hair Design • Program offered at Abbotsford Collegiate • 1 year program • Students begin in gr. 11 • Students complete Level I - ACE-IT • Students tuition is free

  25. Career Program Options • Welding • 1 Year UFV Program offered through Abbotsford Collegiate • Students complete the program at the TTC in Chilliwack • Students begin in grade 12 • Students earn their “C Ticket.”

  26. Heavy Equipment Operator • Offered at Yale Secondary • 10 week program, includes both theory and practical • Students can apply in gr. 11 or 12 • Students earn qualification to operate Heavy Equipment and are signed on as SSA’s by the BC Roadbuilders.

  27. Career Program Options • Studio Works – Broadcasting Academy • Program Offered at Rick Hansen Secondary • Students earn Preferential Admission to BCIT’s Television Production Program • Students complete course work over 3 semesters, between gr. 9-12.

  28. Career Program Options • Horticulture • Kwantlen Polytechnic University Program offered through Robert Bateman Secondary • Students begin in grade 12, 6 weeks instruction at Kwantlen followed by 2 months paid work experience • Complete Certificate in Sustainable Resources/Horticulture.

  29. Regional Career ProgramsUFV (RCP) • UFV reserves spots for students interested in the following career programs: • 1. Aircraft Structures • 2. Auto Collision Tech • 2. Dental Assisting • 3. Electronics Technician • 4. Heavy Duty Transport • 5. Home Suppport/RCA • 6. Hospitality Event Planning • 7. Joinery • 8. Plumbing • ** Students complete in their grade 12 year, must have grade 11 plus English 12 complete

  30. Secondary School Apprenticeship • $1,000.00 awards • Students must complete 1100 hours work experience under the supervision of a qualified tradesman • Course credit - 16 credits available: SSA11A,11B,12A and 12B

  31. Secondary School Apprenticeships • $1000.00 scholarships available • Students must sign up • Student must be employed in a trade related field • Employer agrees to hire the student as an apprentice • Student logs hours • Student employment hours are reported to the ITA (Industry Training Authority • Must complete 1100 hours and still be employed 5 months after graduation to qualify

  33. Hospital Rotation • Work Experience Option • Students complete a hospital rotation • Suitable for students interested in a career related to a health field, ie. Nursing, lab tech, or medicine.

  34. Firefighting Academy • Work Experience Option • Available to gr. 11 or 12 students • Students apply to the Academy • Will need to attend 6 school day sessions, plus 2 evenings • Suitable for students interested in firefighting as a career

  35. Police Academy • Work Experience Option • Students Apply to the Police Academy • Suitable for students interested in a career in policing

  36. Skills Contests • Gravity Vehicle Contest • February 26, 2010 • Abbey Arts Centre • Grade 9/10 students • Teams compete for “fastest car” and “Best Overall Design” • “T”shirts for all participants • Free Pizza Lunch • Medals and Team Trophies ….. On the line!

  38. Robotics Challenge • 2nd Annual Gearbots Robotic Challenge on Jan. 13th, 2010. • Yale Secondary and UFV partner to host the competition for grade 9 students at UFV in Chilliwack • Mr. Dereck Dirom from Yale Secondary and Mr. Randy Kelley, Electronics Instructor at UFV host the competition.

  39. Skills Canada • Abbotsford will host the 14th Annual Regional Skills Contest – March 31, 2010 • Winners go on to Provincial Skills at Tradex in Abbotsford on April 21, 2010 • Nationals are held May 20-23, 2010 in Waterloo, Ontario

  40. Skills Canada – Provincial Skills • Tradex in Abbotsford will host the Provincial Skills Contest - April 22, 2010 • Gold Medalist 2009 – BC Skills, Ken Meunier, Electrical, Abbotsford Collegiate
