Collaboration Between Data Centres and The British Library: Enhancing Data Citation Practices

In collaboration with various data centres, The British Library actively promotes data citation standards across the UK. Established in 1972, the Library supports research by providing access to millions of publications under Legal Deposit. As a founding member of DataCite, the Library facilitates the minting of DOIs for datasets, enhancing their discoverability and citation in academic works. Through workshops and collaborations, we advocate for effective data citation, enabling researchers, publishers, and institutions to share and manage data responsibly.

The British Library • National Library of the United Kingdom created in 1972 by the British Library Act • Receives one copy of every publication published in the UK and Ireland under Legal Deposit • Collections cover all formats; sound, images, video, newspapers, maps, manuscripts, databases, books and journals, much more • 3 million items incorporated into the collections every year • Over 16,000 people use its collections every day • Grows at 12km of shelving per year • UK member of DataCite

The British Library and DataCite • The British Library is one of the original founding members of DataCite (2009) • In 2010/11 we started pilot projects with a small number of data centres • From 2012 we moved from a pilot phase in to offering a full service in the UK and increased the number of participating data centres to 11 • Slowly growing and as of today we have 22 organisations using the service (with more in the pipeline!) • We provide the DataCite infrastructure in the UK, enabling data centres to ‘mint’ DOIs for data • We work collaboratively with the research data community to provide advocacy and guidance on data citation
