  6. 4. Shoot from the hip.

  7. 5. Take a LOT of pictures.

  8. 6. Get names.

  9. 7. Trick people into a good pose.

  10. 8. Don’t schedule a photo shoot outside at noon.

  11. 9. Avoid the zoom. Move instead.

  12. 10. Take pictures outside with your back to the sun.

  13. 11. Read your user’s manual.

  14. 12. Unless you’re shooting a portrait, it’s weird for the subject to look at the camera.

  15. 13. Know what kind of a picture you want before you show up to shoot.

  16. 14. Take charge. Tell your subjects how you want them.

  17. 15. Do not touch your subjects.

  18. 16. Give clear directions to your subjects.

  19. 17. Don’t blame the subject if you’re getting a bad shot. This will prevent you from ever getting a good picture.

  20. 18. Don’t take pictures of a crowd where people are taking pictures.

  21. 19. Basketball: pictures from the hoop.

  22. 20. 45’ angle from subject is your best shot.

  23. 21. Keep garbage cans and ugly stuff out of shot.

  24. 22. Avoid under trees if sun is shining through in little spots.

  25. 23. Watch crowd. Notice someone fun and focus on them. Use them as a focal point.

  26. 24. Use a step stool.

  27. 25. Make sure subjects fix hair, necklaces, clothes.

  28. 26. Bring a mirror.

  29. 27. Avoid head on shots unless it’s a portrait

  30. 28. Find creative backgrounds. NO LOCKERS OR BRICK WALLS

  31. 29. Don’t photograph athlete’s backs. Baseball: don’t stand at third base line.

  32. 30. Do NOT flip photos.

  33. 31. Do NOT photoshop to the point the photo is a lie.

  34. 32. Pay Attention! If you are unprepared or mess up, you have to do the shoot again. This annoys people!!

  35. 33. If there is too much sun have subjects close their eyes for 45 seconds and look down. When they look up on your count, shoot.

  36. 34. You can control the background by changing your angle.

  37. 35. Do NOT be polite. Get in the way.

  38. 36. Vary the modeling poses you request of your subjects. We don’t want a yearbook where everyone is standing the same exact way.

  39. 37. Move around and talk to your subject.

  40. 38. Avoid windows behind your subject. It floods them out.

  41. 39. Trick the camera if you have a bright background. Hold your shoot button down half way at something in good light at the same distance as your subject. This adjusts the camera’s focus and light. Then quickly aim at your subject and shoot.

  42. 40. The second photo is always the best. Take one and then people will look up or look at your camera. Shoot again. This one is usually the better shot.

  43. 41. BE FRIENDLY! Don’t HARASS people. If people insist they do NOT want their picture taken, encourage them to see me if they want to be in the yearbook.

  44. 42. LEGAL: Do NOT shoot those who have opted out.

  45. 43. Panning: Move with the subject

  46. 44. Avoid flash outside.

  47. 45. Know how to use your camera.

  48. 46. Adjust your settings between each shift in position.

  49. 47. Level background lines, not people.

  50. 48. You don’t need to be the one who takes the photos for your page.
