  3. Question 1 • Why is verbal format sometimes the best way to tell a story? • Answer: • Quotes allow people to tell their own stories. Words provide facts, detail, & descriptions.

  4. Question 2 • Describe the following types of verbal elements: • Headlines • Feature Stories • Quick Reads • Captions

  5. Headlines • The large lettering at the top of a page to attract readers and to summarize the story.

  6. Feature Stories • They tell the 5 W’s and H. (Who, What, When, Where, Why, & How)

  7. Quick Reads • A short story, figures, & in non traditional story formats.

  8. Captions • A short description of a photo.

  9. Question 3 • Explain the kind of questions a reporter asks for the 5 W’s & H. • Answer: • Who: People’s names. • What: Description of the event. • When: When is the event. • Where: Where is the event. • Why: Why is the event occurring. • How: Method of event operation.

  10. Question 4 • Describe the following types of photography used on a yearbook spread with their descriptions. • Single Shot • Series • Montage • C.O.B. • Mortise

  11. Single Shot • One picture taken to tell a story.

  12. Series • Three or more pictures taken to tell a story.

  13. Montage • A collection of photos.

  14. C.O.B. • A picture with the background cut out.

  15. Mortise • A small photo inset/inserted into a larger photo.

  16. Question 5 • Why must the verbal and visual journalists work together? • Answer: • To make the story more complete which gives readers more complete answers in the story & more focus when using both.

  17. Question 6 • Describe the different purposes of photojournalistic and reference photos. • Photojournalistic photos – These photos tell stories, show action, & reaction. • Reference photos – These photos are portraits & group shots to show school enrollment. • NOTE: Venn diagram on next slide.
