  1. Journey Through the Human Body Presenter: Samantha Elias

  2. Introduction The human body is a magical thing. There are many different components that all work together to help you to live. Understanding the parts of the body and their function in the various body systems is important. Through this WebQuest you will travel through the different body systems and explore the organs that are part of them. You will be asked to work with a group of 4 or 5 and be assigned a body system, research this system, and create a presentation for your classmates.

  3. Task What are you to do?! • You will choose your partners. With your partnerSyou will be assigned one of the following body systems: Skeletal/Muscular, Respiratory, Nervous, Circulatory, Digestive, Immune Then what?! • You must find out what the system does, what organs are part of the system (or what makes up this system), what other systems your system interacts with, and why it is important. • With your partner, you will then create a presentation for the classroom. This presentation must range from 7-10 minutes.

  4. Process Now that you have your partners, and your body system you are to: • Research your body system using the internet. (Make note of the useful information you find on scrap paper, so its easy to look back!) • As a class, we will go to the computer lab where you will be able to work with your group. You will have two class periods to gather the information you need for your presentations.

Process continued: • On the presentation, you must include: • The function of your body system • The organs (or other components) that make up your system • Why this system is important • A labeled diagram of the system • What other systems it interacts with • How this system helps to maintain homeostasis in the body • At least 2 diseases/disorders of the body system • For the specific body systems, groups must include different information. The information is on the following pages.

Process continued: • Skeletal/Muscular • How many bones are in an adult human? • What are the different types of joints? • How do the skeletal and muscular system work together? • Nervous • What are the two divisions of the nervous system, and their functions? • What are the major divisions of the brain? • How does a reflex work? • What are neurons?

Process continued: • Immune • What are antibodies? • What are antigens? • What are the lines of defense that the body has against disease? • What are the components and percentages of the normal make-up of blood? • Digestive • What products are secreted by the stomach? • What are the three parts of the large intestine? • What is the role of cilia? • What is bile, and where is it produced and stored? • What is the function of the liver?

Process continued: • Circulatory • How many chambers does the heart have? • hat are these chambers? • What is the function of each of the chambers of the heart? • What is a synapse? • Respiratory • Where does air enter the body? • What are the two phases of breathing? • What is the structure that stops food from entering the windpipe? • What are cilia, and their function in this body system?

  9. Process continued: • You will have another 2 class periods to put together your presentation for the class. • You can choose one of the following as a form for your presentation: • PowerPoint • Prezi Presentation • Glogster • Poster • Another visual form, that is approved by the teacher

  10. Process continued: In your presentation: • Should include all of the required information • Information should be organized and neatly done • The information can be typed or handwritten. If hand written, write on lined paper, and use clear handwriting! • Include titles and subtitles for each section of your presentation • Make sure that your presentation has at least 4 pictures, in addition to the required labeled body system picture.

  11. Process continued: Your Presentation: You will be presenting your poster to your classmates. Your presentation should be about 7-10 minutes, and cover everything on your poster board (the front side, backside with both timeline and reflections). Be sure you practice your presentation with your partner, to make sure that when you present you are well rehearsed and ready. Each partner should take an equal amount of time to speak Be sure to share the work equally. You are working with a partner, this assignment is a joint effort!!

  17. Conclusion • Now that you have created your own presentation about a body system, and listened to your classmates present, you should have a basic understanding of how your body works. You should be able to describe the functions of each system, the organs involved, and how each system works together to keep your body functioning.

  18. Teacher Page • What is this project all about? • This is a group research project which requires students to work in a group to research a given body system. Students are then asked to put together a presentation to share their findings with their classmates. This way, students will learn about their own body system, but will also become knowledgeable on the systems their classmates researched. • This project is designed for multiple reasons: • To get students acquainted with research on the computer. • To give students experiences with research and “weeding out” the unnecessary information, while focusing on what is important for their assignments. • To give students a further look inside the body • Grade Level Intended for: • Regents Living Environment (9th/10th grade) • This assignment could be used for any level of student that understands basic researching skills. It can be modified to fit students needs.
