  1. COLONIAL QUILT PROJECTS 2NW Project for 10th Colonial History

OBJECTIVE • Students will synthesize their knowledge of the Colonial era and the American Revolution to create an illustrated quilt that represents the following four topics from two different perspectives: colonial society, slavery in the colonies, events leading to the Revolution, and the war for independence. • Essential question: How can we view life in the colonies and the American Revolution from different perspectives?

  3. QUILTS • Used throughout American history to tell stories of our past • Usually made with two layers of fabric with some soft substance (wool, down or cotton batting) in between • Yours will be made of paper and have just one layer

  6. Planning Process • Step One: Choose groups (today) • Step Two: Complete Brainstorm sheet and Quilt Layout– due at the end of class on Wednesday • Use your time in the library to do research. Work with your partner (or alone) to decide what information you want to include on your quilt and how you want to do it. What elements do you want to include? • By the time class is over tomorrow, you need to have a clear idea of what you are doing and who is responsible for what.

Timeline for the activity • Planning/Library Days (Tuesday and Wednesday 11/9-11/10) • Brainstorm Sheet and Quilt Plan Due (11/10) • Brainstorm and Quilt Plan sheet returned to you with comments (11/15) • Progress meetings with teacher (11/19) • Quilts due– Presented in class (11/30) • Must complete self-assessment on your quilt prior to turning it in • Quilts will be displayed in library and voted on by students and teachers in early December *** Winning quilt will be recognized with announcements and a prize!
