  4. Barriers of Listening • Not concentrating • Listening to details rather than the main thought • Assuming we know what the speaker will say • Being distracted by delivery or appearance Lucas

  5. Using a passive approach • Allowing distractions from “noise” • Not relating to topic • Experiencing message overload

  6. Message Overload: Too much information in too short of time using too few channels.

  7. Reasons for Listening: • Information • Critique/evaluation • Social/enjoyment • Empathic Lucas

  8. Information • What is it? • Listening for the purpose of being able to accurately recall what you have heard. • When is it used?

  9. How is it done? • Concentrate • Listen actively • Use thought speed time • Resist distractions • Don’t prejudge speaker • Keep an open mind

  10. Take notes efficiently • Look at the speaker • Offer feedback • Focus your listening • Main points • Evidence • Techniques

  11. Critical / Evaluation • What is it? • Listening for the purpose of making a value judgment When is it used?

  12. How is it done? • Become aware of personal biases • Learn about the speaker • purpose? • Background • Qualifications

  13. Be aware of nonverbal influences • Analyze reasoning, evidence, and sources • Apply tests of logic • Understand before you decide • Be aware of unethical persuasive techniques

  14. Social / Enjoyment • What is it? • Listening to build relationships or to appreciate • How is it done?

  15. Empathic • What is it? • Listening for the purpose of understanding another person’s thoughts or feelings. When is it used?

  16. Do not judge • Do not interrupt • Ask questions • Be “fully present” • Paraphrase (Mirroring) • Know when to get professional help
