  2. Birth and Death • He was born in Ostenfeldein Germany. • Date of birth was October 31, 1815. • He died in February 19, 1897.

  3. College • His father sent him to the University of Bonn at age 19. He studied law while he was there but earned no degree. • He decided to go to Munster Academy. • He met a mathematician named CristofGudermann who became a strong influence.

  4. Teacher • In 1841 he began a 14 year term as a elementary teaher. • He started a program called arithmetization of analysis in which analysis is based on rigorous development of the number system.

  5. A Poet in the Works • “It is true that a mathematician who is not somewhat of a poet, will never be a perfect mathematician.”
