  2. Movement Analysis • Shoulder Joint (shoulder girdle, humerus) • Function: base of support • Movement: abduction/adduction on frontal plane. Flexion/Extension on the sagittal plane

  3. Movement Analysis • Elbow Joint (radius/ulna and humerus) • Function: assists the shoulder with movement • Starting Position: flexed • Movement: • Downward Phase: elbow flexion • frontal plane (sagittal axis) • Upward Phase: elbow extension • frontal plane (sagittal axis)

  4. Movement Analysis • Radioulnar Joint (radius and ulna) • Function: assist in lifting by supporting the weight • Pronation throughout entire movement

  5. Movement Analysis • Wrist • Function: keeps weight steady while raising and lowering • Starting and ending position: neutral

  6. Movement Analysis • Movement: It depends on the variation of exercise. • Straight Bar, Dumbbells, Bands, or Unilateral: • Downward Phase: adduction of the glenohumeral joint along the frontal plane; sagittal axis. Flexion of the elbow, frontal plane; sagittal axis. Radius and ulna remain pronated. • Upward Phase: abduction of the glenohumeral joint along the frontal plane; sagittal axis. Extension of the elbow along the frontal plane; sagittal axis. Radius and ulna remain pronated.

  7. Muscular Analysis • Primary Muscles Trained: Anterior deltoid • Dynamic Stabilizers: Triceps, Long Head for all, (Dumbbell Shoulder Press uses Biceps Brachii)(Barbell Military Press uses Biceps Brachii, Short Head)

  8. Muscular Analysis • Synergist: middle trapezius, lower trapezius, triceps brachii, lateral deltoid, posterior deltoid, serratusanterior, inferior digitations, (Dumbell Shoulder Press and the Barbell Military Press uses the pectoralis major)(Barbell Behind the Neck Press uses supraspinatus)

  9. Variation Comparison • All Use Elbow Flexion • At the top of the Dumbbell Shoulder Press, the position of the wrists are close together at apex of movement. However, with the Barbell Military Press and Barbell Behind the Neck Press the wrists are further apart at highest apex.

  10. Variation Comparison • Glenohumeral Joint abduction is more exaggerated with the Dumbbell Press than with the Barbell Press • There is more shoulder external rotation on Behind the Neck Shoulder Press at the bottom of the movement unlike Barbell Military Press and Dumbbell Shoulder Press (see visual representation on next slide).
