Why is pledge education changing? Alpha Kappa Psi is constantly reviewing its programs and events to ensure the quality of the programming and education is suiting the needs of its members and keeping up with the changing needs of higher education and corporate industry. As the start of the member experience, pledge education is no exception.
What is the new program? 5-8 week program Focus on Education & Integration
Educational Modules The Educational Modules are a time for the pledge class to focus on their education of the fraternity and its key skills. Risk Reduction BuildingRelationships Values • Specific lesson plans • Facilitated by the Fraternity Educator • Attendance is limited to the pledge class and pledge education committee, except where noted • Building Relationships includes icebreakers with the chapter • Each module begins with a few chapter officers introducing themselves and their role Emotional Intelligence HandlingFeedback Interviewing
Personal Development Plan • Due by Module Two • Opportunity to self-evaluate where they are coming into the program in regards to key skills and identify where they want to focus their growth throughout the program • Will be reviewed with their Big Brother periodically throughout the program to track progress
Create a Resume • Due by Mid-Term Interview • May visit Career Services or create on their own • Opportunity to create a resume or revise an existing one • Will be reviewed at Mid-Term Interview • Not a requirement for pledges to have reviewed by any number of brothers beforehand
Informational Interview • Due by Court of Honor • May reach out to anyone in a field of interest • Can be conducted in person, via email, phone, or video conference • Opportunity to make a connection in the industry and gather career and industry information from a professional currently working in the field
Fraternal Exam The Fraternal Exam is online and there is no limit on retakes. Quizzes are for the pledge's learning and should not be used as a disciplinary tool. It will be administered before Mid-Term Interview andpledges must pass it by Court of Honor. The anthem and creed portion of the Fraternal Exam is administered orally.
Rituals The Mid-Term Interview is a professional interview experience designed to prepare pledges for an actual job interview. No fraternal knowledge questions can be asked, but there are approved fraternal experience questions. Court of Honor is a presentation and focuses on reflection.
Big Brother Mentor Program The Big Brother Mentor Program is required. Each pledge will receive a Big Brother at the beginning of the program to serve as their mentor.
Elective Bank Chapters can tailor the program by selecting additional activities based on Personal, Professional and Fraternal Development. Elective Bank Design Electives allow chapters to add activities specific to their university or culture. Chapters select from a bank of approved activities with corresponding guidelines and requirements which are reviewed and updated annually. In an effort to keep the time constraints of the program in place, chapters have a designated number of elective credit hours allowed based on the length of the program. Elective credit hours are assigned based on the length of time the activity takes to complete.
Brother Interviews Informal Interviews: 15 – 20 Minutes long; approximately 4 per week Must be no more than 2 pledges and 2 members at a time. The chapter provides a list of brothers available to meet with their contact information. Interviews can be set up via phone or email, or in person. The focus is on building a fraternal network as opposed to interviewing skills. Brothers and pledges should carry on a conversation to get to know one another. After the conversation, pledges must send a brief thank you email to the brother, copying the pledge educator for verification of completion. Formal Interviews: 30 minutes long; approximately 2 per week Must be 1:1 interviews. The chapter provides a list of brothers available to interview with their contact information. Interviews are professionally coordinated (by formal email or phone introduction) by the pledge with the member. The process is taught at the Induction Module. The focus is on the interview process as opposed to brother networking. Brothers should ask the pledges questions to simulate an interview experience, but be prepared for pledges to ask them questions as well. After the interview, pledges must send a formal thank you email to the brother, copying the pledge educator for verification of completion.

Starting with Induction and ending with New Brother Orientation, the Program Syllabus takes fraternity educators through each aspect of the program to help plan a pledge education program tailored to the needs of the incoming pledges within the given parameters. Chapter Integration Start getting to know your future Brothers from the start! • Invite them to chapter events • Allow them to participate in chapter committees • Reach out to them and form connections • Connect them with other Brothers and Alumni
How does this affect recruitment? Get to know the potential members, their values and goals Be open and honest about all expectations, requirements and benefits of pledging Alpha Kappa Psi and becoming a member of the Fraternity. Find out why they are interested in joining! • Why should someone join? • What will they get out of pledging? • What will they get out of chapter membership? Share the benefits of the pledge process and chapter membership Discuss the requirements of pledging and membership Consider if they would be good fit and have the potential to be a good Brother!
