  2. Why are elections central to democracy?  Aims To discuss the reasons why elections are important To identify the different types of elections held in the UK

  3.  Your task • Your teacher will give you a series of statements about elections in the UK. Decide if they are true of false. If they are false, see if you can correct them.

  4.  Your task • Study the information in Watts, p.41 and note down types of elections held in the UK. If you can, note the type of voting system used.

  5.  Your task • There are two principal types of electoral systems, majoritarian and proportional. Note down the characteristics of each one, using Watts, p.42-3

  6. General elections, by-elections, European elections, local elections … are there just too many different types of elections and too many different voting systems in use in the UK? Read p.43 and discuss with your partner

  7.  Plenary • Which of these statements most accurately describes the electoral system in the UK? Explain your choice. • It produces a representative government • It produces coalition governments • It accurately reflects the mood swings in the country.

  8.  Homework • Read p.44-6 and create a scales chart recording the strengths and weaknesses of FPTP
