Hydrogen sulfide is released into atmosphere Volcanic Eruptions Hot Springs Anaerobic Decay of Sulfur containing biological material Marine Algae produce dimethyl sulfide Sulfur dioxide is released by volcanoes and also when dimethyl sulfide reacts with oxygen gas Burning of fossil fuels Sulfure Dioxide reacts with atmospheric oxygen to produce sulfur trioxide Some of the Sulfur Trioxide reacts with water to form sulfuric acid Sulfur oxides also react with ammonia to produce ammonium salts The beginning of the cycle

Wind carries some droplets of sulfuric acid and sulfate salts, which fall to the Earth in the form of acid IMPORTANT NOTE- ALL LIVING THINGS NEED SULFUR TO CREATE PROTEINS Plants get sulfur from taking ions of sulfate salts from the soil Animals get their sulfur by eating these plants. They release their sulfur when they die and decay Decomposition releases sulfate salts which can be absorbed by plants Some hydrogen sulfide enters the atmosphere When there is no oxygen, anaerobic bacteria break down hydrogen sulfide and release the sulfur gas Bacteria that requires oxygen can incorporate sulfur into sulfate salts and which can be absorbed by the plants and enter the food chain again. It is a cycle

More Sulfur Information The largest storage areas for Sulfur are underground in rocks, minerals, and sediments Humans affect the sulfur cycle by burning sulfur containing coal and oil to produce electric power, which greatly increases human input of sulfur dioxide Also, refining sulfur containing petroleum to create gasoline, heating oil, and other products Using smelting to convert sulfur compounds of metallic minerals into free metals like copper Sulfur is found in the organic compound of dimethyl sulfide, DMS (CH3SCH3)
