  4. PORTFOLIOS • Portfolios help students organize work • Portfolios encourage students to reflect on their performance • Portfolios inform student-led conferences • Portfolios are organized around three ASCA standards

  5. WHY? • To organize important information • To plan for the future • To market themselves for college and jobs • To reflect on accomplishments

  6. PORTFOLIO BASICS • Portfolios can be paper or electronic • Navigation lesson plans include “how-to” instructions and annual portfolio checklists • Navigation lesson plans include time to update portfolios • Students add to portfolio each year and use portfolios for student-led conferences

  7. PORTFOLIO STRUCTURE • Portfolios are organized around 3 ASCA standards:

  9. PORTFOLIO SETUP • New students learn why they will keep portfolios • And they get help starting their portfolios

  10. PORTFOLIO CHECKLISTS • Students receive a checklist of contents each fall • And have regular opportunities to add to their portfolios

  11. MOUNT BAKER CHECKLISTS Checklists help students and advisors organize the portfolio with little effort.

  12. MOUNT BAKER CHECKLISTS Checklists also offer suggestions of specific pieces of work that students can add to their portfolios.

  13. PORTFOLIO CONTENTS • WORK SAMPLES – represent evidence of learning, students can reflect on progress • NAVIGATION WORK – including Academic Inventories, Annual Goals, High School & Beyond Plan worksheets • COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT – information on activities, community service, jobs, awards

  14. MOUNT BAKER CONTENTS Every lesson and supporting document is clearly marked to indicate portfolio pieces.

PORTFOLIO REFLECTION • If you wish, you may ask students to reflect on their work sample entries • Level of effort (on a scale of 1 to 5) • Overall quality (on a scale of 1 to 5) • Why did you choose this work sample? • What did you learn from this assignment? • What did you do well in this assignment? • In the future, how will this work sample help you?

  16. PORTFOLIOS IN ACTION • Students organize their portfolios around 3 ASCA standards • They use their portfolios to reflect and tell their stories

  17. PORTFOLIOS AT MOUNT BAKER SLC’S • Nearly all of the SLC is based on artifacts taken from the portfolio • Academic Strength and Weaknesses • My Test Scores and What They Mean • Career Interests Sheet • Graduation Requirements Checklist • Pre-Registration Sheet

  18. LOGISTICS: MEDIUM • Paper or electronic – either will work • If paper, use 3-ring binders or folders – dividers can separate ASCA areas • If electronic, use web- or server-based software – need to plan for security, student access

  19. MOUNT BAKER LOGISTICS: MEDIUM Paper Two inch view binders, with cardstock dividers Handouts and lesson supporting documents are color coded by area.

  20. LOGISTICS: STORAGE • Where should students’ portfolios be kept? • If paper: stored in advisors’ rooms or taken home with students? • If electronic: stored on school’s server or on the Internet?

  21. LOGISTICS: DISTRIBUTION • Portfolios must be easily accessible by students during advisories • Advisors and school administrators may also need regular access • Students will need to share parts of portfolios during conferences • May want to give students their portfolios at graduation

  22. MOUNT BAKER LOGISTICS: STORAGE & DISTRUBUTION Each advisor holds the portfolios for their advisory group. Students can check their portfolios out from their advisor. Students can access their portfolios at anytime, as long as they are not interrupting class. Portfolio supporting documents can be found online for kids that missed an advisory period.

  23. MOUNT BAKER LOGISTICS: STORAGE & DISTRUBUTION Students take their portfolio the advisory period before their SLC. Students keep their portfolio after they give their Senior Presentation. Portfolio accountability is part of the withdrawal process.

  24. HOW DO I USE MY GRANT MONEY TO SUPPORT PORTFOLIOS? Storage (file cabinets, plastic totes, baskets) Printing Binders Curriculum alignment Equipment (three hole punches, staplers)
