Identity crisis Pictorial Representation of a minister • The Steward (2:1-2) • Responsibility to guard the truth and invest in others (2:2) • Treasure from God’s Word, not ideas or philosophies • Strength to teach God’s Word: apt to teach implies apt to learn • The Soldier (2:3-4, 8-13) • He endures hardship (3) • He avoids worldly entanglement (4) • Committed to the commanding officer, Jesus • Purpose: to please the Lord • He magnifies Jesus Christ (8-9) • Captain of our salvation (Heb. 2:10) • Purpose to bring honor and glory to Jesus • Magnify their ministry of His Word

He thinks of the whole army (10) • Elect are God’s people (10) • He trusts his commanding officer (11-13) • “Faithful saying” • Death leads to life • Suffering leads to reigning • “He remaineth faithful; he cannot deny himself The Athlete (2:5) • Obeys the rules • Paul was a loser, yet a winner • Suffering as an evildoer • Obey God’s Word no matter what they say The Farmer (2:6-7) • Plowing, sowing, watering, or harvesting • A farmer has work to do • Ministry is a hard work • A farmer needs patience • “See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop and how patient he is for the autumn and spring rain” (James 5:7)

A farmer deserves his share of harvest • “The hardworking farmer should be first to receive a share of crop • Pastor should be supported (2 Tim. 2:6) by the church • “If we have sown spiritual seed among you, is it too much if we reap a material harvest from you (I Cor. 9:1) • The spiritual leaders who share God’s Word with the people are the first to enjoy its blessings • Joy at of seeing planted seeds bear fruit in lives of others • Farming is a hard work. It can have many disappointments, but the rewards are worth it

The Workman (2:14-18) • Study to be diligent, be zealous • Diligent so that he will not be ashamed when his work in inspected • Rightly dividing: cutting straight • Pastor: w workman in God’s Word • Tools for building, measuring and repairing God’s people • An approved workman diligently studies God’s Word • An approved workman will shun “godless chatter” (2:16) • An approved workman know that false doctrine is dangerous and he will oppose it. • Gangrene (2:17) spreads and infects the body of Christ • Hymenaeous and Philetus, who taught that resurrection had taken place

Workman will either be approved or ashamed • Approved: one who has been tested and found acceptable • Luther; prayer, study and suffering make a pastor • Ashamed: below standard and cannot be accepted The Vessel (2:19-22) • “great house”: professing church • Foundation is safe and secure because of God’s seal • Godward aspect of the Christian life: “The Lord will know who are his (Numb.16:5) • Manward aspect of the Christian life: Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity (2:19) • Vessels for performing household functions • Honor (gold and silver) and dishonor (wood and clay)

False teacher: dishonor • Timothy means “God-honoring” as separate vessels of honor and dishonor from false teachers • “Useful to the Master” (21) • Separate from the sins of the flesh (22)Balanced separation: we flee sin but follow after righteousness • Fellowship “with all them that call on the name of the Lord”; out of pure heart (22) The Servant (2:23-26) • Servant: doulos meaning slave • No will of his won: of sin or of God • Satan opposes God’s servants • Some are difficult to teach • “Foolish and stupid arguments (23) • Ignore arguments, not people • Persistent and gentle, teaching God’s Word in meekness • Must instructs those who oppose him

Servant’s purpose: not to win argument, but win souls • “recover”: coming out of a drunken stupor • (26) They are delivered out of the Devil who took them captive • Ministry, no place for loafer • Require discipline and work • Church members need to pray for pastors and encourage them in Lord’s work • Pastor and members labor together
