You can avoid gum diseases and tooth loss with brushing and flossing. • The number one cause of gum disease is cavity build-up. When plaque accumulates at your gumline and is not removed immediately, it hardens and turns into tartar. The bacteria present in both plaque and tartar causes swollen, red gums.
