  1. ENERGY EFFICIENCY IN DRAFT SYSTEM Dileep Kumar DGM Corporate Operation Services NTPC Limited

  2. Boiler Systems • Water treatment system • Feed water system • Steam System • Blow down system • Fuel supply system • Air Supply system • Flue gas system

  3. Boiler Draught …a force required to • Maintain air flow through a fire bed to aid complete combustion • Draw the resulting hot gases through the system • Remove the products of combustion and discharge to atmosphere

  4. Functions of Draft System • To supply to the furnace the required quantity of air for complete combustion of fuel • To remove the gaseous products of combustion from the furnace and discharge these through chimney to the atmosphere

  5. Classification of Boiler Draught • Natural Draught • Artificial Draught • Induced Draught • Forced Draught • Balanced Draught

  6. Natural Draught • Caused by a Chimney • Easy to construct • Has a long life • Needs no auxiliary power • Draught produced varies with weather conditions and temp of FG • No flexibility to create more draught to take care of peak loads

  7. FANS IN A THERMAL POWER STATIONS • FORCED DRAFT FANS • INDUCED DRAFT FANS • PRIMARY AIR FANS • IGNITOR AIR FANS • SCANNER AIR FANS • SEAL AIR FANS

  8. FANS IN NTPC STATIONS

  9. AIR PATH

  10. PRIMARY AIR PATH

  11. FLUE GAS PATH

  12. Areas of energy saving • Plugging the air leakages in the duct system • Reducing the pressure drop across ducts. • Reducing the air in leakage from APH . • Changeover to VFD control over hydraulic control • Insulation

  13. Plugging the air leakages in the duct system • Expansion joints • Mettalic • NMEZ • Erosion of ducts • Cracks in the duct system • Air ingress from manhole doors.

  14. Reducing the pressure drop across ducts
