  1. Rotary International Minute February 2019-In anticipation of trip to India next week, Jackie will provide a more detailed follow up report when she returns.

  2. Rajiv Gandhi School-Demolition and Rebuild Rajiv Gandhi School is in a slum region of factories, one of which is owned by Venu Babu, a charter member of the Rotary of Greater Hyderabad. (Tammy and Mike have met him at a Rotary Meeting). Carnevali Foundation has decided to completely replace this school located in a very poor neighborhood. We will determine if it will also be possible to include a pre-school. And we will investigate what are the options for post primary education for future consideration. The attached slides show photos of Rajiv Gandhi School taken when Giuseppe and I visited there last November. Giuseppe and Jackie are very excited about this project.

  3. The school is located on uneven land, down from a garbage dump. During monsoon, water, garbage and sludge flow into the school.

  6. The Neighborhood-some live in buildings and others live in homes built of trash.

  7. The local neighborhood: Water comes from an underground pipe by dropping a bucket into the hole.

  8. We will be so happy to serve the children of this slum.

The plan as of today: • Demolish (similar to what was done at Maktha) • Construct ground floor to include bathrooms, kitchen, RO, Headmasters office and an open play area. • Construct 2 floors of classrooms to include a library room. Currently 120 children-number has dropped due to poor condition of facility. • Determine if we can also include a pre-school room. • Investigate and decide on water source, electricity, plumbing and possible installation of solar panels. • Hyderabad Rotary/Venu Babu has committed to finding temporary location of classes while construction is underway.

  10. Also on Jackie’s agenda: Maktha Awards Ceremony will be held to honor students with excellent academic and attendance. Our grads will give inspirational speeches. We have just started reading classes for illiterate parents at our school called, Pappireddynagar. If successful we will expand to our other schools. We will host a dinner for all our students who are in or who have graduated from university. Our Maktha graduates will be included. We are also adopting a school called, Nehru Nagar which is a grade 1-10 school of 800 students. Excited to be adding another 1,000 students to the Carnevali Foundation. We will continue our search for a proper building for the Maruthi Orphanage for Girls.

Our Maktha Grads-photo from November visit and a recent school report about progress. • Pochamma is studying inter 1st year MPC group, she is studying well and attendance is also very good as class teacher said.prefinal exams is going on presently final exams will be held from Feb 27th. • Anusha is studying diploma 1st year. I met her HOD he said that Anusha is studying well and she is regular student.first semester results have been declared she secured 75%as they said. • Mahalavika is studying diploma 1year.she is studying well and regular student as they said but results have been declared first semester .she has two subjects backlog. She has to study very hard.i meet with her and ask her what are  the problems She is facing. she said that she couldn't understand the subjects that's why she got failed 2 subjects those are drawing and maths subjects. So she will work hard and complete those subjects,she is going for English coaching ,and finally I met her class teacher to take care of her. Note Jackie and Giuseppe have assigned Ravi, one of our original teachers, to be the mentor of these girls. He checks on them weekly. We will give support to Mahalavika.

  12. Parents learning to read What moved me most about this idea is that when I described the idea to our scholarship kids last November, they were ENORMOUSLY EXCITED.  Imagine having parents who cannot read or write-as you are aiming for a college education and a professional career.

  13. 2/5/20199IS A GREAT NUMBER! Right now the goal is to be non-threatening and supportive, emphasizing how great it is that they are interested and willing.  We will serve tea and cookies and encourage them to invite others.  I was hoping to get 4 to attend so 9 is a great number.   You can also see Radhika there and Chandrashakar who managed the local recruiting. What moved me most about this idea is that when I described the idea to our scholarship kids last November, they were ENORMOUSLY EXCITED.  Imagine having parents who cannot read or write-as you are aiming for a college education and a professional career.
