  1. Journal Entry: December 6-7 Why do we often hurt the ones we love? Write about a time you have experienced this.

  3. Careen (verb) To rush carelessly The drunk driver careened into the passenger’s side of the on-coming car.

  4. Doggedness (noun) Persistence, stubbornness. The child’s doggedness was the main reason she could read at the age of three.

  5. Exotic (adjective) Excitingly strange. The exotic pet store sold very unusual types of reptiles and fish to wealthy collectors.

  6. Heresy (noun) An action or opinion contrary to what in generally thought of as right. When the girl proclaimed that she did not like chocolate, her friends gasped at her heresy.

  7. Imminent (adjective) About to occur. The crash of the plane was imminent once the wing fell off.

  8. Infallibility (noun) An inability to make errors. The students believed in the infallibity of their teacher, but she too was human.

  9. Invalid (adjective) Too ill to live a normal life The zookeeper had to feed the invalid lion a diet of ground beef .

  10. Iridescent (adjective) Shining with shifting rainbow colors The bride’s wedding ring was iridescent in the springtime sun.

  11. Precariously (adverb) Insecurely; in a dangerous way The football player ran precariously along the sideline in an effort to gain one more yard.

  12. Reiterate (verb) To repeat The teacher found it tiresome to reiterate herself constantly in the unruly class.

  13. Academic Vocabulary Motif (noun) A dominant idea, central theme, or repeated pattern in a work of art or literature. Monet went through a period when the motif of his work was water lilies.
