  3. Cold War • US President: John F. Kennedy • Soviet Premier: Khrushchev • Chinese Premier: Mao Zedong • Cold War: US vs. Soviet Union • Both China and Soviet Union are socialist states, but do not get along with one another (rivals)

  4. Cuban Exodus • After 1959 (Cuban Revolution), more than 1 million Cubans have left. • Fidel: "Anyone who wants to leave Cuba can do so“. • 1960-1980: mostly upper-class whites (creoles) • “Brain drain”: skilled, educated Cubans leaving the country.

  5. US Embargo • Starts Oct. 1960 • US bans all sugar imports from Cuba • Helms-Burton Act: US citizens are prohibited from doing business w/ Cuba • Ban on tourism • Trade embargo costs Cuba $700 million, US $3.6 billion annually

  6. Classwork • Divide up the reading (A- Bay of Pigs and B- Cuban Missile Crisis) with your partner and answer the questions in your notebook. Share out and write down each others’ answers. • This will be checked off tomorrow at the beginning of class for your CW grade today.

  7. Homework (Due Wednesday 11.07) • Write a short diary entry pretending to be one of the following people… • Fidel Castro • Che Guevara • ordinary Cuban farmer • John F. Kennedy • Fulgencio Batista In your diary entry, discuss your role/attitudes towards Cuba and the revolution. Use at least SIX details/terms in your answer. Please underline these details. WRITE THIS IN YOUR NOTEBOOK
