  2. 1. Follow Directions • Read all directions BEFORE starting an activity • Ask questions • Don’t begin until told to begin • Don’t TOUCH anything until told to • Don’t ever experiment by yourself – always have a partner • Ask for permission before trying to investigate further

  3. 2. Dress Code • Wear Goggles and aprons when: • Using glassware, sharp objects OR chemicals • Heating an object • Working with anything that can easily fly up into the air • Tie back long hair • Do not wear loose sweater, scarf or jewelry

  4. 3. Heating and Fire Safety • Never reach over a flame or heat source • Never heat a substance or object in a closed container • Never touch an object that has been heated – USE MITTS, CLAMPS OR TONGS • Know where Emergency equipment is • Do not throw hot substances into the trash

  5. 4. Electrical Safety • Never use equipment with frayed cords • Make sure no cord is lying on floor or hanging over side of counter

  6. More Electrical Safety • Never let cords hang into sinks or where water is found • Turn off all equipment and unplug when finished • Unplug by pulling the plug

  7. Chemical Safety • Never touch, taste or sniff any chemicals in lab • Use ‘Wafting’ procedure • If you get a chemical in your eye, use eyewash station right away AND TELL TEACHER • Keep lids on all chemicals not being used

  8. More Chemical Safety • NEVER put unused chemicals back into the original container • Pour chemicals over a sink or work area, • Always wash your hands after handling chemicals, plants or soil

  9. Glassware and Sharp-Object Safety • If you break glassware, tell your teacher right away • Do not use broken or chipped glassware – notify and give to teacher • Use all cutting instruments carefully • Always cut AWAY from yourself

  10. Animal Safety • Never hurt an animal • Follow teacher’s instructions for handling animals • Do not place anything in cages of animals

  11. Cleanup • Clean your work area and pick up anything that has dropped to the floor • Wash your hands when finished with lab • Follow teacher’s directions for throwing away used materials • Follow teacher’s directions for putting away supplies • ALL lab members help with clean up

  12. Poster Project Requirements A. Must include 8 categories • Directions 2. dress code • Heating & Fire Safety 4. Electrical Safety 5. Chemical Safety 6. Animal 7. Glassware/sharp object 8. clean up B. Each section MUST be labeled C. Write 1 rule for each category in YOUR OWN WORDS • MUST have illustration for each category • MUST be practice rule NOT breaking rule • Add some color • YOUR NAME must appear on front in lower right hand corner
