    1. Safety in the Science Classroom

    2. General Guidelines Conduct yourself in a reasonable manner Follow all written and verbal instructions Never work alone Do not touch any equipment or chemicals until told to do so Unauthorized labs are prohibited

    3. NO EATING, DRINKING OR CHEWING GUM

    4. Clean after yourselves. Keep aisles clear. Notify instructor of unsafe conditions Dispose of chemicals as instructed by your instructor

    5. No horseplay, practical jokes, and pranks are allowed.

    6. Know where safety equipment are.

    7. Read all labels and equipment instructions. Keep hands away from face, eyes, mouth and body while using chemicals or preserved specimens. Clean and return equipment to their proper storage place. Monitor experiments personally. Do not wander to other lab areas.

    8. Science storage areas are off limits to students. During fire drills, follow your instructors directions. Handle all animals, dead or alive, humanely. Do not point knives at others. Do not catch falling sharp instruments

    9. Clothing Let instructor know if you wear contact lenses Secure dangling jewelry and loose clothing

    10. Use closed toed shoes no sandals allowed.

    11. Tie back long hair

    12. Goggles are to be worn at all times.

    13. Accidents and Injuries Yell out Code one, Code one, if you or a partner is hurt. Do not touch mercury from broken thermometers

    14. Use safety shower for 20 minutes if necessary Flush eyes with running water if splashed with chemical.

    15. Report any spills, breakage, or injury.

    16. Handling Chemicals Consider them all dangerous. Do not taste, touch or smell unless told to do so. Take only as much as you need. Do not return unused ones in their containers. Do not use mouths as pipets. Hold reagent bottles away from your body when pouring Add ACID to Water. Do not remove chemicals from the laboratory.

    17. Glassware and Equipment Carry glass tubing vertically. Use a brush and dustpan to clean up broken glass Place broken glass in glass disposal containers. Always lubricate glassware before inserting a stopper. Protect hands from cuts by using towels or cotton gloves

    18. Grasp the plug, not the electric cord, when removing an electrical plug from its socket. Make sure your hands are dry. Never use chipped, cracked or dirty glassware. Report any frayed cords, exposed wires, and loose connections on any electrical equipment immediately. Ask if you do not know how to use an equipment Do not immerse hot glassware in cold water it may shatter.

    19. Heating substance Hair, clothing and hands must be kept at a safe distance from flames at all times. Never reach over an exposed flame. Never leave a lit burner or a anything that is being heated unattended. Do not point the open end of a test tube at yourself or your neighbor. Exercise caution when handling heated metals and glassware Never look into a container that is being heated.

    20. Do not place hot apparatus directly on the laboratory desk use a ceramic fiber pad. When bending glass, allow it to cool before further handling.
