  1. President Training 2009-2010 Austin Community College Office of Student Life

  2. Transferable skills of a Club/Org President • Managerial • Public Relations • Project Management (Event Planning)

  3. Managerial • Leading meetings: See your Sample Agenda in the Club Toolbox. Try Robert’s Rules of Order (Ask SL!). • Brainstorming: Create a comfortable environment where all members feel confident to share ideas for the group! Take a back seat sometimes and let other voices be heard!

  4. Managerial • Strategizing: Know the group goal and create a plan to get there. Know your strengths and weaknesses. Also know group members strengths and where to best utilize them within the steps towards the group goal. • Delegating: Give group members responsibilities that fit their interests Major/strengths. Help members realize the part they play within the success of the club. This will increase motivation and club dedication.

  5. Ways to Delegate • Ask for volunteers by a show of hands or a sign-up sheet. • Appoint or suggest someone. “Aaron, you’re really good at making fliers; how about you create the flier!” This also shows your confidence in their abilities. • Assign through a committee. Pick a few people to work together on a project to relieve the pressure.

  6. Ways to Delegate • Don’t ask people to do something you just don’t want to do! Delegate jobs with substance! • Define expectations clearly and follow-up on the progress with honest and informative feedback. • Give recognition for a job well done! Examples: Send out a mass email thanking them for the good job, make them club member of the month, or just say something “Awesome job on that flier Aaron!!”

  7. Managerial • Promoting Consensus: Work to make sure all voices of the group are heard and considered. Take the time to make a decision all parties feel good about! • Supporting cooperation and cohesion: Pay attention to the group climate! Tension happens, but learn to take notice when conflict needs to be resolved! • Ask SL to help with a mediation session or training! • Active listening: You’re the President…you should know what’s really going on in the club! If you missed the last thing said in the meeting, ask the person to repeat what they said or paraphrase what you heard to make sure you understand the meaning correctly.

  8. Public RelationsHow does your group look from the outside? • Work to build good relationships within ACC and outside of ACC…build your good rep! Maintain your relationship and connection with your advisor; they can help connect you to ACC Faculty and Staff. • Your club is a reflection of your leadership; present your best! • Take care to have consistency in your marketing; people will recognize your branding and might take notice! • You’re the spokesperson; work on your presentation skills! • Ask SL how we can help!

  9. Public Relations • Network with local community groups/orgs that correlate with your club/org goals…you might just make a professional connection that could land you a job! • Also connect with other ACC clubs/orgs; you may share similar goals and can collaborate to create bigger and better events! Utilize Interclub Council meetings! • Recruiting: Share your passion for your group’s cause or purpose with other students. • Also let them know the perks of how involvement can create professional connections and look good on a resume and/or transfer paperwork.

  10. Project Management/Event Planning • Leading the group in creating, promoting, and implementing events. • Have fun creating an event look and décor! • Know what you need to create the event: Event Proposal form, Facility Request, Media Request…CAB Paperwork if getting funding (See forms in the Club Handbook). • Ask SL about making a layout; this can help your event run smooth. Each campus has layouts that fit that specific campus! • Having a duty list for each event is also helpful in running a smooth event. • Requirement: Clubs: One event per year
