Mobile Communication Aid for Deaf Patients in Pharmacy Settings
This paper presents a prototype communication aid on mobile devices designed to support Deaf individuals when visiting public hospital pharmacies to collect medication. The prototype enhances communication using South African Sign Language (SASL) and text, bridging the gap between Deaf patients and non-signing pharmacists. By extracting relevant dialogue and translating instructions into SASL video, the aid allows Deaf patients to review communication details on their device. Future work includes user trials to refine the tool based on real-world feedback.
