  2. Thesis • The Germans’ use of chlorine gas in the Second Battle of Ypres introduced chemical warfare to Europe, effectively starting a race between the Allies and the Central Powers to develop both offensive and defensive weaponry.

  4. The Basics • April 22 to May 25 1915 • France, Canada, BEF (Great Britain) vs. Germany • Took place in Ypres, Belgium • Series of four battles (this is the second)

  5. Chemical Warfare Used • Germans used chlorine gas on the Allied troops to divert Allied attention towards the Eastern Front in two rounds • It targeted and hurt the lungs of the Allied soldiers • Fired from 6OOO cylinders • They released it according to the wind to target and guide the chlorine

  6. Chlorine Gas in Battle • Created a gap 8000 yards long in the Allied line • 5000 allied troops died (chlorine poisoning). (half of the troops died within the first ten minutes) • Canadians used wet clothes as makeshift masks • Germans didn’t take advantage of this (couldn’t control it completely) • Ended in a stalemate

Effect • Only major attack by German forces that year • Created a new type of warfare: chemical warfare- how to fight with it and how to defend it • Changed how they planned military strategy- some wanted to drop the chlorine from planes • Allies came up with their own weapons (including bombs with chlorine and mustard gas)
