Data Center Migration Roadmap

This guide not only helps ensure you remember to plan for everything, but if you aren’t a regular migrator (and many aren’t – large migrations, for many, tend to be a maybe once or twice in a career thing), the list also serves to highlight things that could otherwise go easily overlooked.

  1. Data Center • Migration Roadmap www.Device42.com | Page X

  2. project1 Readiness Assessment and Creation of a Pre-Migration Plan www.Device42.com | Page X

  3. Determine the scope of the migration • Ensure the migration is viable • Identify and recruit key business stakeholders and IT leaders • Agree upon security restrictions • Create a configuration management policy and ensure the appropriate software exists to enable it (A CMDB – like Device42!) www.Device42.com | Page X

  4. project2 ProjectPlanning www.Device42.com | Page X

  5. Work with project planning staff • Define hardware & software requirements • Identify vendors that fit the defined needs • Designate (or assess the status of, if one already exists) a central location to keep all documentation e.g. The IT Architecture (hardware & software), the support structure, SLA’s, and maintenance contracts • Ensure processes and systems are in place to monitor and assess performance, availability, service levels & capacities and otherwise monitor the health of the system • Create a plan (yes, now!) for what will happen to the legacy data center and/or replaced hardware www.Device42.com | Page X

  6. project3 Migration Prep & Solution Design www.Device42.com | Page X

  7. Gather a detailed assessment of your current data center • Map all application dependencies for involved applications • Create individual groups and migration plans for each group based upon dependencies • Ensure a backout plan is included in each migration group’s plan, and designate a person to make the backout call for each migration group • Create and agree upon the migration’s SLAs • Purchase necessary hardware, software, and /or sign agreements with chosen vendors • Run any necessary pre-migration tests and simulations, both on processes and target validation (ensure plans will work & new DC equipment meets specs) www.Device42.com | Page X

  8. project4 The Migration www.Device42.com | Page X

  9. Stick to the plan • Ensure designated go / no – go person signs off on each step’s completion, or if necessary is ready to make the backout call • Ensure designated communication channels are all functioning and all groups are ready • Migrate! • Monitor everything closely for anomalies and ensure monitoring systems function as expected • Independently validate each migration group www.Device42.com | Page X

  10. project5 Post – migration Party & Decommissioning the Old Data Center www.Device42.com | Page X

  11. Validate the migration, ensure all legacy systems are no longer being utilized • PARTY! Then get some sleep • Mark each system as decommissioned and/or remove from your CMDB • Dispose of old hardware as planned in step 2 www.Device42.com | Page X

  12. Hopefully it is a long time before you have to do this again! Congrats, your migration was a SUCCESS! www.Device42.com | Page X
