Repairing Decks – A Step-by-Step Guide

The deck is one of your prized possession and would have cost you hundreds of dollars but remember, it also bears the maximum brunt of the weather. Whether is the scorching summer, hail and storms, or freezing sub-zero temperatures, a deck has to go through every adversity that the weather can throw at it. Hence, you must take proper care of your deck, check it frequently for any issues, and have them set right at the earliest. Decks are often neglected to the point where they have to be replaced but once you are serious about proper maintenance and repairs, a deck can be rejuvenated for a cost that is a lot less than a replacement.

  2. Here are some of the deck repairtechniques that can be used to give a fresh lease of life to adeck and maintain it like new for years. If you call in professional and specialist deck servicing agencies the cost is approximately $1 per square feet depending on the extent of repairs required.

  3. Inspecting the deck Start with a thorough inspection of the deck, paying a lot of attention to those parts that come in direct contact with the ground like the joists, stair stringers, and posts. Check for structural damage with a screwdriver. You have rotted wood on your hands if the screwdriver sinks into it. Next, check the connection to the house. Look for fasteners that are bent or rusted and loose screws. Inspect the railings and deck for splinters.

  4. Cleaning the surface Every deck should be cleaned at least once a year. If you have maintained the deck well, it can be revived with just a cleaner. Mix it in a bucket – standard measurement is one gallon of the cleaner for 250 sq. ft. – before application. Use a stiff-bristle brush to work the cleaner into the wood. For tough stains pressure hosing the deck is the best solution. After the cleaner has been worked into the deck, rinse it well and dry thoroughly before starting on the staining for deck repair.

  5. Applying the stain Once minor deck repairhas been carried out and the deck is clean, you have to apply the protective finish. The best is to choose a semi-transparent stain where the grain of the old wood will show through but will still have a uniform finish if you have added new wood. Stain unlike paint is absorbed by the wood without a film forming on top and therefore will not peel or chip from the damaging effects of the sun. • Redoing the railing Because the railing is critical not only as a protective feature but to help the old and the infirm get to the deck, it should be thoroughly checked. If necessary, replace it with a vinyl-coated wood-paste composite as it will be strong, sturdy, and long-lasting. Take up periodical deck repairactivity and get years from your existing deck.
