  5. The Power of a NameLaurie Cook • Establishes a relationship: Anonymity vs. worth/Importance • Memorize your seating chart: Know a name to correct the behavior

  8. Discipline vs. Behavior Management Behavior Management • Be SUBTLE • Use “the LOOK” • Say the NAME • Stand CLOSE • Use effective seating and partnering • Ignore (case by case basis) Discipline • With egregious behavior as a last resort

  9. Positive Behavior Management • Don’t say “don’t” • Don’t ask “ok?” • Say “whisper” instead of “don’t talk” or “be quiet” • Use the Golden Rule • Talk in private • Ask questions—”why are you talking?” • Let showoffs lead (shine or fail) • Reward good behavior

Students then create a story map to delve into the different story elements. Ms. Granville introduces zydeco music and the instruments typically used to create it, such as the washboard, accordion, and spoons
