  2. Chapter 4 Objectives • Great teachers engage students so that they feel like part of the lesson….You could easily engage students in class by substituting frills for substance. The techniques in this chapter will consistently draw students into the work of class and keep them focused on learning.

  3. Techniques from Chapter 4: 22 – Cold Call – Done Today. 23 – Call and Respond or ‘Group Choral Response. 24 – Pepper – rapid questions. No pauses. 25 – Wait Time – Question with announced time for answers. 26 – Everybody Writes - Harder thought questions that you ask and then tell them to write down their answer. Cold Call students to read theirs. 27 – Vegas – Upbeat, short burst of energy that focuses on lessons. Songs, chants, or lyrics. Off and On components.

Technique 22 – Cold CallWhy we need it……. • During class discussions you want all student to pay attention and create a situation where every student feels it is possible they might be called upon. • Develop a system where all your kids are answering your question in their minds, and only one is verbalizing the answer. Cold Call does both of these.

  5. Cold Call Benefits and Components: • When checking for understanding, call on random students to answer the question, even if they aren’t raising their hands. You can even have a rule of no hand raising. - The key is to normalize Cold Call as a natural, normal, and positive part of your class.

Increases speed in pacing and the rate at which you can cover material. - With Cold Call you no longer scan the room and wait for hands or hear yourself saying “I’m seeing the same 4 hands”, “I want to hear from more of you.”, or “Doesn’t anyone else know this?!”

  7. Cold Call Benefits and Components: 3. Allows you to engage more students in the work of the classroom. You send a message of ‘I want to know what you have to say’ and ‘I care about your opinion.” - Cold Call should not be negative or chastening.

Why is Cold Call so effective? • Cold Call is predictable. • If you cold call for a few minutes of your class almost every day, students will come to expect it and change their behavior in advance. • The purpose of cold call is to engage students before they tune out. • It is an engagement strategy, not a discipline strategy. NO GOTTCHAS!!!

  10. Why is Cold Call so effective? • Cold Call is systematic • Make cold call about teacher expectations, not about individuals. • Use with an even, calm tone in engaging students. • You can emphasize the systematic nature of Cold Call by keeping visible charts of who has been asked.

Why is Cold Call so effective? • Cold Call is positive. • You show your respect and faith in a student when you ask her to join the conversation. • Ask substantive questions – not ones designed to ‘teach a lesson’ on listening. The goal of Cold Call is to get the answer right!! Not to embarrass those not listening. • Have question ahead of time and well thought out. Cold Call fails when teachers aren’t prepared.

  12. Why is Cold Call so effective? • Cold Call is scaffolded. • Build your cold call lesson so that questions start out easy, like reviewing the previous days’ lesson, and then building up to more difficult questions.

  13. Key Points in a Successful Cold Call 1. Time the name. ‘What is 3 times 9? (pause) Jimmy? Makes all students get the answer, with one telling the answer aloud. Give shy students a ‘precall’ Cold Call. “Ok, Paul will give us the answer, and Karen, you will tell us how he got it.”
