  1. Service for Change By: Griffin Roelle

  2. Service-Learning • “A teaching and learning strategy that integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen communities”(National Service-Learning Clearinghouse)

  3. The Benefits • Increase your understanding of the class topic • Gain hands-on experience (possibly leading to an internship or job later) • Explore or cement your values and beliefs • Have opportunities to act on your values and beliefs • Develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills • Grow your understanding of diverse cultures and communities • Learn more about social issues and their root causes • Improve your ability to handle ambiguity and be open to change; become more flexible

  4. More Benefits • Develop or enhance your skills, especially in the areas of communication, collaboration, and leadership • Test out your skills, interests, and values in a potential career path, or learn more about a field that interests you • Connect with professionals and community members who you will learn from • Grow a professional network of people you might connect with again later for jobs or internships • Satisfy your urge toward public service or civic participation

  5. Blazer Build • Habitat for Humanity - We built houses for the community in order to help those that are less fortunate. I personally worked on the roof most of the time, putting up shingles.

  6. Dosta Dash • A few football players and I went to encourage the participants in the races. There were people ranging from ages 4-70. The races were meant to raise money for the Valdosta Junior Service League to help with the youth programs.

  7. W.E.S Field Day • I went to Westside Elementary School dressed up in my VSU football jersey. I played with all the children and signed autographs on their field day. They were excited that the Valdosta State Blazers were at their school.

  8. Meet the Blazers • This was a community wide event for Valdosta, where tons of kids came to meet our football team. The children came out on the field and we had drills set up for each position and they rotated to each one.

  9. My experience • For me, I got a lot out of giving back to the community. It was a great feeling of gratification to see not only the children’s faces, but also the parent’s faces when they saw the Blazers coming to support them. Im glad I have the opportunity to change peoples lives, whether it is building houses or playing with children. I enjoyed all the time I have put in for the community.
