  2. Introduction Paragraph- What is the purpose of an introduction? • Get your reader interested in a topic • Give the reader the background information they need to understand your essay • Give your reader a preview of what you intend to tell them

  3. Example Introduction World’s Ugliest Dog Competition Have you ever seen a dog that was so ugly you thought it was cute? At the Sonoma-Marin Fair in Petaluma, California they celebrate ugly dogs every year at their Ugliest Dog Competition. The competition started in the 1970s and invites ugly dogs and their owners from around the world to participate. The owner of the awarding winning ugliest dog gets $1,000, and the dog gets a year’s supply of doggie treats. The World’s Ugliest Dog Contest is a great American tradition because it celebrates man’s best friend, encourages international unity, and provides family-friendly entertainment.

Historical Relevancy: This year, a California fair celebrates a unique 25th anniversary, the 25th anniversary of the World’s Ugliest Dog Competition.

Introduction Paragraph: Background Information Background Information- your personal experience with the topic AND an introduction to the research you conducted The BACKGROUND INFORMATION gives the reader the facts they need to understand your essay EXAMPLE: The competition started in the 1970s and invites ugly dogs and their owners from around the world to participate. The owner of the awarding winning ugliest dog gets $1,000, and the dog gets a year’s supply of doggie treats.

  9. Background Information Breakdown Personal Experience- events you have lived through Background Information- what you have read about or learned from another source including relevant history, terminology, or other pertinent details

  16. Example Body Paragraph Dogs are commonly referred to as man’s best friend. Like men, they come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and colorations. The world’s ugliest dog competition celebrates the diversity of the species and even allows mutts to compete, unlike in traditional dog competitions. Also unique to this competition is that some of the dogs competing are available for adoption from the audience. This contest celebrates the odd and the bizarre of the dog world because even the ugliest of dogs could be some man’s best friend.
